    „Sonic and ultrasonic weapons (USW) are weapons of various types that use sound to injure, incapacitate, or kill an opponent. Some sonic weapons are currently in limited use or in research and development by military and police forces. Some of these weapons have been described as sonic bullets, sonic grenades, sonic mines, or sonic cannons. Some make a focused beam of sound or ultrasound; some make an area field of sound.

    Extremely high-power sound waves can disrupt or destroy the eardrums of a target and cause severe pain or disorientation. This is usually sufficient to incapacitate a person. Less powerful sound waves can cause humans to experience nausea or discomfort. The use of these frequencies to incapacitate persons has occurred both in anti-citizen special operation and crowd control settings.
    The possibility of a device that produces frequency that causes vibration of the eyeballs—and therefore distortion of vision—was suggested by paranormal researcher Vic Tandy in the 1990s while attempting to demystify a „haunting“ in his laboratory in Coventry. This „spook“ was characterised by a feeling of unease and vague glimpses of a grey apparition. Some detective work implicated a newly installed extractor fan that, Tandy found, was generating infrasound of 18.9 Hz, 0.3 Hz, and 9 Hz.

Age-related hearing loss apparently prevents the ultra-high pitch sound from causing a nuisance to those in their late twenties and above, though this is wholly dependent on a young person’s past exposure to high sound pressure levels.
    High-amplitude sound of a specific pattern at a frequency close to the sensitivity peak of human hearing (2–3 kHz) is used as a burglar deterrent.
    Some police forces have used sound cannons against protesters, for example during the 2009 G20 Pittsburgh summit, the 2014 Ferguson unrest, the 2016 Dakota Access Pipeline protest in North Dakota, among others.
    It has been reported that „sonic attacks“ may have taken place in Cuba in 2016 and 2017, leading to health problems, including hearing loss, in US and Canadian government employees at the US and Canadian embassies in Havana. Reporting of odd sounds, later to be determined to be crickets were attributed to symptoms suffered by US Embassy employees. Subsequent testing revealed brain lesions consistent with pesticide exposure, which was subsequently attributed to improper ventilation after fumigation of the building.

    Studies have found that exposure to high intensity ultrasound at frequencies from 700 kHz to 3.6 MHz can cause lung and intestinal damage in mice. Heart rate patterns following vibroacoustic stimulation has resulted in serious negative consequences such as atrial flutter and bradycardia.

    Noise-induced neurologic disturbances in scuba divers exposed to continuous low frequency tones for durations longer than 15 minutes has involved in some cases the development of immediate and long-term problems affecting brain tissue. The symptoms resembled those of individuals who had suffered minor head injuries. One theory for a causal mechanism is that the prolonged sound exposure resulted in enough mechanical strain to brain tissue to induce an encephalopathy. Divers and aquatic mammals may also suffer lung and sinus injuries from high intensity, low frequency sound. This is due to the ease with which low frequency sound passes from water into a body, but not into any pockets of gas in the body, which reflect the sound due to mismatched acoustic impedance.

    The first study of a new treatment in humans demonstrates a noninvasive, harmless cancer killer

    Tumor cells that spread cancer via the bloodstream face a new foe: a laser beam, shined from outside the skin, that finds and kills these metastatic little demons on the spot.
    In a study published today in Science Translational Medicine, researchers revealed that their system accurately detected these cells in 27 out of 28 people with cancer, with a sensitivity that is about 1,000 times better than current technology. That’s an achievement in itself, but the research team was also able to kill a high percentage of the cancer-spreading cells, in real time, as they raced through the veins of the participants.
    If developed further, the tool could give doctors a harmless, noninvasive, and thorough way to hunt and destroy such cells before those cells can form new tumors in the body. “This technology has the potential to significantly inhibit metastasis progression,” says Vladimir Zharov, director of the nanomedicine center at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, who led the research.

    The spreading of cancer, or metastasis, is the primary cause of cancer-related death. Cancer spreads when cells from primary tumors break off and travel through the bloodstream and lymph system, settling in new areas of the body and forming secondary tumors.
    Killing these circulating tumor cells, or CTCs, in the bloodstream before they have a chance to settle could help prevent metastasis and save lives. Simply being able to count CTCs could help doctors more accurately diagnose and treat metastatic cancer—something no device has been able to do efficiently.
    Zharov and his team tested their system in people with melanoma, or skin cancer. The laser, beamed at a vein, sends energy to the bloodstream, creating heat. Melanoma CTCs absorb more of this energy than normal cells, causing them to heat up quickly and expand.
    This thermal expansion produces sound waves, known as the photoacoustic effect, and can be recorded by a small ultrasound transducer placed over the skin near the laser. The recordings indicate when a CTC is passing in the bloodstream.
    The same laser can also be used to destroy the CTCs in real time. Heat from the laser causes vapor bubbles to form on the tumor cells. The bubbles expand and collapse, interacting with the cell and mechanically destroying it. Imagine shooting bad guys in video games, or shining ultraviolet light on bacteria. If that kind of thing feels good to you, imagine how satisfying it would be to point this laser at your loved one’s cancer cells.
    The purpose of the study published today was to test the accuracy of the device in detecting CTCs. But even with the laser in a low-energy diagnostic mode, it killed a significant number of CTCs in six patients. “In one patient, we destroyed 96 percent of the tumor cells” that crossed the laser beam, says Zharov. He and his colleagues say they hope the laser will be even more effective when they turn up the energy in future studies.
    Zharov came up with the idea for the technology more than a decade ago, and since then has been testing it in animals and demonstrating its safety to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), whose approval was required before proceeding with the clinical trial. Zharov says the device is the first noninvasive CTC diagnostic to be demonstrated in humans.
    At least a hundred other devices designed to monitor CTCs have been proposed. These systems typically involve drawing blood from a vein and analyzing it outside the body. Only one such device has received approval from the FDA: a machine called CellSearch that’s about the size of an oven. It handles small samples of blood, providing only a snapshot of the CTCs that might be present in the whole bloodstream. Consequently, this kind of diagnostic isn’t broadly used in standard cancer care.
    Researchers at the University of Michigan in April announced that they had made progress on this front. Their wrist-worn device pumps blood out of the body, captures CTCs, and then pumps the cleansed blood back into the body. Still, in a study in dogs, the device only processed a couple of tablespoons of the animals’ blood over two to three hours.
    Zharov’s device can examine a liter of blood in about an hour, without the blood ever leaving the body. Its sensitivity is about a thousand times greater than that of CellSearch, the researchers reported. Next Zharov and his colleagues are testing the device on a larger human population, and combining it with conventional cancer therapies to see the effects on metastasis.
    The photoacoustic effect, by the way, was first described by Alexander Graham Bell in 1880, when he transmitted vocal signals in an invention called the “photophone.” Zharov’s team dubbed their device the “cytophone.” (Get it? “cyto-” means “of a cell.”)

    Bislang wurde die Gefahr für die Bevölkerung in Deutschland als „mäßig“ eingestuft. Die Gründe für die Erhöhung der Gefährdung seien steigende Fallzahlen und Alarmsignale aus öffentlichen Gesundheitsdiensten und von Kliniken. Mittlerweile könne auch nicht mehr jede Infektion nachverfolgt werden.
    Wie der RKI-Präsident weiter erklärt, variiere die Infektions-Wahrscheinlichkeit von Region zu Region. Demnach sei die Wahrscheinlichkeit sich mit Covid-19 zu infizieren beispielsweise im Landkreis Heinsberg sehr hoch. Wieler forderte deshalb alle Krankenhäuser dazu auf, ihre Kapazitäten auf Intensivstationen auszubauen.

    Alle Landräte und Bürgermeister werden zusätzlich aufgefordert, sich zu melden, falls eine Überforderung mit der aktuellen Situation bestehe. Ohne die aktuell getroffenen Maßnahmen könne es schon in wenigen Monaten mehrere Millionen infizierte Personen in Deutschland geben.
    Laut offiziellen Zahlen vom Robert Koch-Institut seien bis zum Montagnachmittag des 16. März, insgesamt 6.012 Personen in Deutschland positiv auf das Virus* getestet worden. 56 Prozent aller infizierten Personen seien männlich. Der jüngste Patient sei laut Wieler unter einem Jahr alt, die älteste in Deutschland positiv getestete Person sei 95 Jahre alt.

    Die John Hopkins Universtät verzeichnete bis zum Dienstagmorgen bereits knapp 7.000 Infektionen in Deutschland. Lothar Wieler erklärt den Unterschied dieser beiden Zahlen mit den unterschiedlichen Meldesystemen. Demnach sei davon auszugehen, dass die Zahlen höher seien, als bislang dem RKI bekannt. In den nächsten Tagen würden sich die Zahlen von beiden Instituten jedoch langsam annähern.
    „Jede Person, die isoliert wird, verlangsamt die Verbreitung des Virus“, erklärt der Präsident des Robert Koch-Instituts weiter. Vier von fünf positiv getesteten Personen würden vermutlich einen milden Krankheitsverlauf durchleben, dabei würden sie Immunität gegen das Virus entwickeln.

    Jede fünfte Person erlebe jedoch einen schweren Krankheitsverlauf, laut Wieler. Wie hoch die Sterberate dann ausfalle, sei noch unklar. Die deshalb in Deutschland getroffenen Maßnahmen seien absolut gerechtfertigt. Ob die Maßnahmen* greifen oder nicht, werde sich in den nächsten Tagen herausstellen. “
