    It’s not just the walls that have ears. It’s also the hard drives.
    Eggheads at the University of Michigan in the US, and Zhejiang University in China, have found that hard disk drives (HDDs) can be turned into listening devices, using malicious firmware and signal processing calculations.
    For a study titled „Hard Drive of Hearing: Disks that Eavesdrop with a Synthesized Microphone,“ computer scientists Andrew Kwong, Wenyuan Xu, and Kevin Fu describe an acoustic side-channel that can be accessed by measuring how sound waves make hard disk parts vibrate.
    „Our research demonstrates that the mechanical components in magnetic hard disk drives behave as microphones with sufficient precision to extract and parse human speech,“ their paper, obtained by The Register ahead of its formal publication, stated. „These unintentional microphones sense speech with high enough fidelity for the Shazam service to recognize a song recorded through the hard drive.“
    The team’s research work, scheduled to be presented in May at the 2019 IEEE Symposium on Security and Privacy, explores how it’s possible to alter HDD firmware to measure the offset of a disk drive’s read/write head from the center of the track it’s seeking.
    The offset is referred to as the Positional Error Signal (PES) and hard drives monitor this signal to keep the read/write head in the optimal position for reading and writing data. PES measurements must be very fine because drive heads can only be off by a few nanometers before data errors arise. The sensitivity of the gear, however, means human speech is sufficient to move the needle, so to speak.
    „These extremely precise measurements are sensitive to vibrations caused by the slightest fluctuations in air pressure, such as those induced by human vocalizations,“ the paper explained.
    Vibrations from HDD parts don’t yield particularly good sound, but with digital filtering techniques, human speech can be discerned, given the right conditions.
    Flashing HDD firmware is a prerequisite for the snooping, the paper says, because the ATA protocol does not expose the PES. This could be accomplished through traditional attack techniques – binary exploitation, drive-by downloads, or phishing – or by intercepting HDDs somewhere in the supply chain and modifying them. The researchers point to the Grayfish malware attributed to the Equation Group as an example.
    To exfiltrate captured data, the three boffins suggest transmitting it over the internet by modifying Linux operating system files to create a reverse shell with root privileges or storing it to disk for physical recovery at a later date.
    While many computing devices come with microphones that might look like easier targets for hijacking, the researchers observe that security conscious individuals may disable known microphones in software or with hardware hacks. A hard disk-focused attack would be less expected.
    But look, let’s be real: for the vast, vast majority of people, this is all just a cunning academic exploitation of hard drive technology. No one’s really going to bug you via your spinning rust.
    But… if they were to, the PES sampling rate (34.56 kHz) allows the capture of audio signals up to 17.28 kHz, which covers almost all of human hearing (20 Hz–20 kHz) and is significantly better than the sampling rate of the telephone system (8 kHz). Since the PES data amounts to air pressure readings, the researchers simply turned the series of PES measurements into linear pulse-code modulation values and then converted these samples into sound via digital signal processing algorithms.
    Wait, there’s a catch
    One limiting aspect of the described technique is that it requires a fairly loud conversation in the vicinity of the eavesdropping hard drive. To record comprehensible speech, the conversation had to reach 85 dBA, with 75 dBA being the low threshold for capturing muffled sound. To get Shazam to identify recordings captured through a hard drive, the source file had to be played at 90 dBA. Which is pretty loud. Like lawn mower or food blender loud.
    The researchers acknowledge this is louder than most practical scenarios but they say they „expect that an attacker using state of the art filtering and voice recognition algorithms can substantially amplify the channel’s strength.“
    While the growing popularity of solid state drives diminish the risk even further, there were still twice as many hard drives sold with PCs in 2017 as there were solid state drives, the researchers claimed.
    To prevent HDDs from being turned into microphones, the trio suggest hard drive makers sign firmware cryptographically and use TLS when distributing updates to prevent MITM attacks.
    They also note that their work may open future research possibilities, such as using a hard disk’s read/write head as a crude sounds generator to issue spoken commands to nearby connected speakers like Alexa, Google Home, and Siri. ®
    Addendum: If you’re suffering deja-vu, the paper cites Alfredo Ortega’s earlier work on using hard disks as microphones, although its authors claim they use a different technique to measure the effects of sound, and require a lower volume compared to other approaches.“

    Auf diese Internetseite sollen Jugendliche und junge Erwachsene auf der ganzen Welt zugreifen und virtuell versprechen, dass sie keine Kinder bekommen wollen, solange das Thema Klimawandel nicht von der Politik angegangen wird.
    Die 18-jährige Emma Lim stellte dafür am Freitag nicht nur der Öffentlichkeit diese Website vor, sondern erklärte auch, wie sie auf diesen Einfall kam.
    „Ich verspreche, keine Kinder zu bekommen, bis ich sicher bin, dass meine Regierung für sie eine sichere Zukunft gewährleisten kann“, soll sie auf einer Pressekonferenz in der kanadischen Stadt Ottawa laut Utopia gesagt haben.
    Auf ihrer Website führt sie weiter aus. „Ich möchte Kinder haben, mehr als fast alles andere sogar. Aber was für eine Mutter wäre ich, wenn ich ein Baby in eine Welt setzen würde, wo ich nicht garantieren könnte, dass meine Kleinen sicher sind?“, schrieb sie dort.
    „Ich habe letzten September den IPCC-Bericht gelesen – und er hat mich erschreckt. Wir sind in so viel größerer Gefahr, als ich es mir hätte vorstellen können“, erklärt sie weiter. „Wir stehen vor vielen, nicht rückgängig machbaren Veränderungen: dem Verlust von Ökosystemen, dem Verlust von Süßwasser, dem Verlust sauberer Luft.“
    Virtuelle Unterschriften sollen Politiker zum Handeln gegen den Klimawandel auffordern
    „Ich möchte, dass meine Kinder all die schönen Dinge sehen, die ich sehe. Ich möchte, dass sie mit mir im Meer schwimmen gehen. Ich möchte, dass sie im Sommer campen, und, dass Autofahrer im Herbst die wechselnden Blätter sehen. Ich möchte mit ihnen rodeln gehen. Ich möchte ihnen beibringen, wie man einen Garten baut“, lauten die Wunschvorstellungen der jungen Kanadierin.
    Emma Lim möchte also um wirklich jeden Preis sicherstellen, dass es ihren Kindern einmal gut gehen wird. Auch, wenn es ihr das Herz bricht, jetzt dieses Versprechen gegeben zu haben und erst einmal auf lange Sicht keine Kinder zu bekommen, wie sie schreibt. „Aber ich weiß, dass ich nicht allein bin“, erklärt sie.
    Am heutigen Freitag ging die Website online und Stand 16.30 Uhr haben bereits mehr als 2000 Menschen unterschrieben. Die Bewegung, die auf Twitter sogar als #NoFutureNoChildren trendete, hat also tatsächlich etwas angestoßen und das Zeug zur nächsten Aktion von Jugendlichen auf dem Niveau von Fridays For Future.

    Ursprünglich wollte Emma Lim mit dieser Website nur die kanadischen Politiker zum Umdenken anstoßen. Durch den Twitter-Hashtag-Trend gibt es nun jedoch weltweite Aufmerksamkeit.
    Man kann auf Lims Internetseite auch einige Statements der unterzeichnenden Jugendlichen lesen. Und diese kommen nicht nur aus Kanada und den USA. Es finden sich genauso die Geschichten von jungen Menschen aus Venezuela, Kolumbien, Großbritannien, sowie Frankreich, Schweden oder auch Deutschland.
    Jacob Diercks (18) kommt aus Schleswig-Holstein und verewigte sich mit folgenden Worten auf der Seite: „Ich lebe im Norden Deutschlands, direkt an der Nordsee. Vor zehn Jahren war es hier warm, aber nur um die 20 Grad und oft kälter wegen der arktischen Winde“, erinnert er sich.
    „Heute sind es im Sommer mehr als 30 Grad und an manchen Tagen ist es extrem kalt. So wie es aussieht, wird es immer schlimmer. Im vergangenen Jahr haben die Bauern bereits 20 Prozent weniger als sonst geerntet. Ich finde es unverantwortlich, Kinder in solche Gefahren zu bringen. Unsere Regierung tut zu wenig, um das Klima und damit auch unsere Region zu schützen. Dort, wo ich wohne, wird alles bald überflutet sein und ich allein kann nichts tun, um diesen Ort für meine Kinder zu retten“, schließt er ab.
    Mit dem Versprechen auf ein kinderloses Leben übt nun auch er Druck auf die deutsche Regierung aus.“

    solve this problem so I’m not here to talk about me really I’ll tell my story I’m happy to share but what I really want to emphasize is I’m here so we can blow the lid off of secrecy, hello, let’s get through disclosure let’s get there because then we can actually fix some problems …then we can actually have clean green technology will never have to burn fossil fuels again and we will never have to have another airplane crash ever again, because we won’t have jets anymore , we’ll have vehicles that are traveling on magneto-gravitic-propulsion drives and glide through the air safely, fast and more cheaply that’sthe other interesting thing is that the technology in these programs to build spaceships is actually cheaper than the
    fuel and building jet engines the medical technology that can restore damaged limbs and regrow damaged organs is cheaper and less expensive than all of that pharma research and development
    and all of that making drugs and all of this invasive surgery technology all this other medical expense that we’re spending on is gargantuanly out of control as far as expensive all this other
    cheaper better medical technology is cheaper faster easier so why would we be doing something that’s ineffective expensive wasteful polluting when we have all the options of doing things
    cleaner better cheaper because we got there just there we just have to get those programs so that’s the main thing that I’m here to say it’s like this isn’t just about pipe dream hey we
    should talk about this hey maybe someday know you’ve got this technology you we got in these programs we need to get them to the public sphere so that we can fix the problem I mean we wouldn’t have to be sitting around fighting and screaming at each other about climate change if we could just fix some of the problems that are contributing to that we can fix some of the pollution
    problems we can fix some of the air and water and air quality ozone layer problems or technologically fixable so that’s one thing the second thing that is the most important thing is these
    programs who are acting covertly would like you to believe that they are operating under the covert operations law and that they are legal operating systems of covert military intelligence
    this is not the case they are violating article 1 of the Constitution they are violating the Constitution by not answering to the authority of the legislature and the executive branch and
    the supreme court, so by essentially not answering to the legal apparatus of government in this country they are acting illegally, they are rogue agencies, they are not legal, they are not in the legal authority to say: hey we can do whatever we want, they are criminals. (Randy Cramer)“
