Insbesondere in Europa und Nordamerika verbringen weite Teile der Bevölkerung ihre gesamte Arbeitszeit mit der Durchführung von Aufgaben, von denen sie selbst heimlich wissen, dass sie gar nicht gebraucht werden. Der moralische und geistige Schaden, der aus dieser Situation entsteht, ist tiefgreifend. Er ist eine Narbe quer über unsere kollektive Seele. Doch fast niemand spricht darüber“,
    beklagte 2013 der Anthropologe David Graeber die Situation in seinem berühmten Aufsatz „On the Phenomenon of Bullshit Jobs“.“
    „Bullshit Jobs
    Warum ist die Arbeit also trotz des technischen Fortschritts, der die kühnsten Erwartungen von Herrn Keynes noch weit übertroffen haben dürfte, nicht verschwunden? Die vermeintlich offensichtliche Erklärung, dass einfach die Produktion und der Konsum ebenso dramatisch zugenommen haben, erweist sich als statistisch ebenso unhaltbar wie die Idee, dass die Welt heute eben so komplex sei, dass sie ein riesiges mittleres Management bräuchte.
    Denn während der Großteil der „produktiven Arbeit“ in Landwirtschaft, Fabriken und ähnlichen Bereichen mittlerweile tatsächlich von Maschinen verrichtet wird, hat sich ein völlig neuer Arbeitsbereich gebildet, der mittlerweile bis zu drei Viertel der gesamten Arbeitsplätze ausmacht.
    Es sind die Call-Center, Finanzberater, PR-Fachleute, Social-Media-Experten, Wirtschaftjuristen, 24-Stunden-Supermarktkräfte und all die anderen seltsamen Jobs im Dienstleitungs-Bereich, deren Aufkommen Herr Keynes wohl nicht im Entferntesten erahnen konnte.
    „Es ist, als säße irgendwo jemand, der sich sinnlose Jobs ausdenkt, nur um dafür zu sorgen, dass wir weiterhin arbeiten“,
    wunderte sich Graeber im bereits zitierten Aufsatz. Aber es ist sogar noch mysteriöser:
    „In unserer Gesellschaft scheint es eine allgemeine Regel zu geben, dass man umso schlechter bezahlt wird, je offensichtlicher die eigene Arbeit anderen Menschen nutzt. Auch hier ist eine objektive Beurteilung natürlich schwer zu finden, aber eine einfache Möglichkeit, ein Gefühl dafür zu bekommen, wäre zu fragen: Was würde passieren, wenn diese gesamte Berufsgruppe einfach verschwinden würde? Bei Krankenschwestern, Müllmännern oder Mechanikern ist es offensichtlich, dass – sollten diese je in einer Rauchwolke aufgehen – die Folgen augenblicklich und katastrophal wären. Eine Welt ohne Lehrer oder Hafenarbeiter wäre ebenfalls irgendwann in Schwierigkeiten, und sogar ohne Science-Fiction-Schriftsteller oder ..Musiker wäre diese Welt ein geringerer Ort. Es ist aber nicht ganz klar, wie genau die Menschheit leiden würde, wenn alle Private-Equity-CEOs, Lobbyisten, PR-Forscher, Versicherungsmathematiker, Telemarketer, Gerichtsvollzieher oder Rechtsberater ähnlich plötzlich verschwinden würden. (Viele vermuten sogar, dass es die Welt deutlich verbessern könnte.)“
    Die Situation scheint in der Tat absurd und wird immer absurder, je näher man hinschaut. Während die Arbeit knapp wird, sinken immer größere Teile der Bevölkerung in die Arbeitslosigkeit, wo sie aber nicht als Betroffene eines erkrankten System begriffen, sondern von den Medien als Parasiten der Gesellschaft verteufelt werden. Ein großer Teil der arbeitenden Bevölkerung wiederum hängt in Jobs fest, die sinnlos sind. Damit nicht genug: Diese Menschen arbeiten oft auch noch 10-Stunden-Tage in diesen Jobs, oder haben – wie oftmals in den USA – gleich drei solcher Beschäftigungen, um ihre Familien zu ernähren.
    Arbeit und die kranke Gesellschaft
    Der spirituelle Schaden, der so am Menschen verursacht wird, ist gar nicht zu ermessen. Und doch wird dieser Sachverhalt erstaunlicherweise kaum wirklich ernsthaft diskutiert. Die Empörung über dieses globale Verbrechen an der menschlichen Seele, über die gewaltige Verschwendung an Kreativität und Ressourcen bleibt erstaunlicherweise aus, so sehr ist es Normalität geworden.
    Arbeit hat sich längst von seiner eigentlichen Funktion entfremdet – nämlich einen nützlichen Beitrag für die Gemeinschaft der Menschen zu leisten – und erfüllt nurmehr vor allem die Funktion, Gewinne für eine kleine Elite zu erwirtschaften und den Status Quo aufrecht zu erhalten. Es geht nicht mehr um den Nutzen der Arbeit und natürlich schon längst nicht mehr um den kreativen Ausdruck des Menschen. Trotzdem wird Arbeit heute beinahe glorifiziert als etwas in sich selbst Moralisches, ohne dass der Mensch nurmehr eine parasitäre Last für die Gesellschaft darstellen würde.
    Weder im Kapitalismus, noch im Kommunismus fand eine Kritik der Arbeit selbst statt – und in beiden Systemen treten sinnlose Jobs in gleicher Weise auf, wenn auch aus anderen Gründen. Arbeit scheint etwas Unantastbares an sich zu haben – auch aufgrund dieses seltsamen moralischen Status der Arbeit, fällt eine deutliche Kritik offenbar schwer. Und das, obwohl die Folgen mittlerweile recht dramatisch sind.
    In China sterben mittlerweile 600.000 Menschen pro Jahr an Überarbeitung, und zwar ganz direkt, wie im bekannten Fall des PR-Mitarbeiters Gabriel Li, der nach einem Arbeits-Marathon einfach tot vom Stuhl fiel. Oder die indonesische Werbetexterin, deren letzter Tweet „30 Stunden Arbeit und noch immer Top-Fit“ noch immer auf Twitter zu lesen ist. Wenige Stunden nach diesem Tweet starb auch sie – an einer Kombination aus Erschöpfung und zu vielen Energy-Drinks.
    Doch diese spektakulären Tode sind nur mehr die Spitze des Eisbergs. Sämtliche Gesundheitsorganisationen sind sich einig, dass es eine wahre Epidemie an arbeitsbedingten Stress-Erkrankungen, Burn-Out, Depressionen, Angst-Zuständen und den daraus resultierenden physischen Leiden gibt. Der gesellschaftliche Umgang mit Arbeit fordert einen hohen Preis.
    Arbeit kann Folter sein
    In russischen Gefangenenlagern pflegte man Menschen dadurch zu brechen, dass sie 12-Stunden am Tag völlig sinnlose Arbeiten erledigen mussten – etwa Steine von einem Haufen auf den anderen und wieder zurück zu befördern. Während harte Arbeit allein die Menschen zwar erschöpfte, vermochte nur die offensichtliche Sinnlosigkeit des Tuns die Menschen wirklich zu zerrütten, wie man bald herausgefunden hatte. Es gibt wenig Furchtbareres für ein menschliches Wesen, als sein Leben mit etwas vollständig Sinnlosem zu verbringen.
    Und doch tun es Millionen von uns, jeden Tag. Die Tragweite der gegenwärtigen Umstände ist uns allen kaum mehr bewusst, so normal ist der Wahnsinn mittlerweile geworden.
    Noch weniger bewusst dürfte den meisten sein, dass dieses System nicht zufällig entstanden ist.
    „Die herrschende Klasse hat schnell erkannt, dass eine glückliche und produktive Bevölkerung mit einem Haufen Freizeit für sie eine tödliche Gefahr darstellt. Und die Idee, dass Arbeit an sich ein moralischer Wert zukommt, und dass jeder, der nicht bereit ist, sich für den Großteil seiner wachen Stunden irgendeiner Art von intensiver Arbeits-Disziplin zu unterziehen, auch nichts verdient, ist außerordentlich bequem für sie.“ so Graeber.
    Dass Arbeit allein den Sinn erfüllt, unsere gemeinsamen Bedürfnisse zu befriedigen und uns als Wesen auszudrücken und zu entfalten, hat die Menschheit scheinbar längst vergessen und so dreht sie sich nunmehr in einem Hamsterrad, das sie gar nicht mehr als solches erkennt.
    Lösungen
    Wie kommt die Gesellschaft aus dieser Situation heraus? Der erste Schritt ist sicherlich, Arbeit von ihrem moralischen Podest zu heben und zu erkennen, dass unser heutiges, auf Arbeit aufbauendes System ohnehin dem Untergang geweiht ist. Um die Bedürfnisse der Menschheit zu erfüllen, wären wohl wenig mehr als 4 Arbeitsstunden pro Tag nötig. Unsere politischen und wirtschaftlichen Systeme arbeiten jedoch noch immer mit der Illusion der Vollbeschäftigung, die es nie wieder geben kann und wird.
    Der nächste wichtige Schritt ist ziviler Ungehorsam im Sinne der Verweigerung gegenüber sinnlosen Jobs und dem Konsum sinnloser Produkte. Was dabei „sinnlos“ bedeutet, muss natürlich jeder Mensch für sich selbst entscheiden.
    Zuletzt gibt es zahlreiche Ansätze – wie etwa das Bedingungslose Grundeinkommen oder alternative Wirtschaftsmodelle – die versuchen, eine neue Vision der Gesellschaft zu entwickeln. In einigen Ländern, wie etwa der Schweiz, wäre ein System wie das Grundeinkommen mit etwas Engagement der Bevölkerung vermutlich zeitnah durchsetzbar. Von oben allerdings werden solche Veränderungen wohl kaum zu erwarten sein.
    Es braucht eine Neudefinition von Arbeit, mit einer Diskussion, die sich vor allem daran orientiert, welchen Beitrag eine Arbeit für die Gesellschaft leistet. Warum werden eine Mutter oder ein Vater nicht bezahlt, ein Investmentbanker aber schon? Vor allem die Arbeiten, die anderen Menschen wirklich helfen, sollten nicht am Rande der Gesellschaft stehen, sondern in ihrer Mitte.

    Before becoming the third U.S. president, Thomas Jefferson – who was born 274 years ago this week – was an industrial hemp cultivator, growing acres of marijuana’s non-psychoactive cousin on his Monticello plantation.
    Jefferson wrote extensively about best cultivation practices for hemp during his life, he invented a tool to improve hemp harvesting, and he even left us with a statement on hemp that has become a rallying cry for the movement to legalize hemp, which was prohibited along with marijuana back in 1937.
    „Hemp is of first necessity to the wealth and protection of the country,“ Jefferson once reportedly said. That’s because it was used to make rope, sails and other textiles that were essential for keeping colonial America’s navy afloat.
    And Jefferson wasn’t the only commander-in-chief to cultivate hemp. President George Washington also grew acres of it at Mount Vernon. And he referred to cultivation practices over 90 times in his personal diaries.
    „I am very glad to hear that the Gardener has saved so much of the St. foin seed, and that of the India Hemp,“ Washington wrote in 1794. „Make the most you can of both, by sowing them again in drills. . . Let the ground be well prepared, and the Seed [St. foin] be sown in April. The Hemp may be sown any where.“
    Ironically, both Washington and Jefferson would be arrested today if they were caught growing hemp in one of the 20 states where it is still illegal. Those include Texas, Florida and New Jersey. But their home state of Virginia legalized hemp cultivation back in 2015, so they would still be allowed to grow it in Mount Vernon and Monticello — unless Attorney General Jeff Sessions raided them for defying federal cannabis prohibition.

    Transcranial focused ultrasound (FUS) is capable of modulating the neural activity of specific brain regions, with a potential role as a non-invasive computer-to-brain interface (CBI). In conjunction with the use of brain-to-computer interface (BCI) techniques that translate brain function to generate computer commands, we investigated the feasibility of using the FUS-based CBI to non-invasively establish a functional link between the brains of different species (i.e. human and Sprague-Dawley rat), thus creating a brain-to-brain interface (BBI). The implementation was aimed to non-invasively translate the human volunteer’s intention to stimulate a rat’s brain motor area that is responsible for the tail movement. The volunteer initiated the intention by looking at a strobe light flicker on a computer display, and the degree of synchronization in the electroencephalographic steady-state-visual-evoked-potentials (SSVEP) with respect to the strobe frequency was analyzed using a computer. Increased signal amplitude in the SSVEP, indicating the volunteer’s intention, triggered the delivery of a burst-mode FUS (350 kHz ultrasound frequency, tone burst duration of 0.5 ms, pulse repetition frequency of 1 kHz, given for 300 msec duration) to excite the motor area of an anesthetized rat transcranially. The successful excitation subsequently elicited the tail movement, which was detected by a motion sensor. The interface was achieved at 94.0±3.0% accuracy, with a time delay of 1.59±1.07 sec from the thought-initiation to the creation of the tail movement. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of a computer-mediated BBI that links central neural functions between two biological entities, which may confer unexplored opportunities in the study of neuroscience with potential implications for therapeutic applications.

    Introduction
    Brain-to-computer interface (BCI) refers to the hardware and software environment that detects and translates brain activity to control computers or stored-program architecture devices without involving muscles or the peripheral nervous system [1]. To characterize a specific function of the brain, invasive means such as implantable cortical microelectrode arrays that directly detect the electrical field potentials/spikes from the somatomotor areas have been used, for example, to provide BCI control options for quadriplegic patients [2]. Nicolelis and colleagues explored the method of obtaining the neural electrical signals directly from the motor cortex of primates using an implanted cortical electrode array, and decoded the signals obtained during complex motor intentions, into the appropriate machine control [3]. Velliste et al. used intracortical recording schemes in monkeys to convert motor cortex neural activity into a correlated mechanized prosthetic arm movement used for self-feeding [4]. Other than these BCI methods which require a surgery to implant electrodes to the brain surface, non-invasive functional imaging modalities such as electroencephalogram (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have also been adopted in implementation of BCI. For example, non-invasive EEG-based BCI, with the combinatory inclusion of navigation algorithms, was successfully implemented to allow for thought processes to control the direction of a wheelchair movement [5]. Yoo and colleagues used fMRI, with real-time processing capabilities, to provide computer cursor directional commands based on spatial patterns of cortical activity that were linked to predetermined thought processes [6]. This ability was later expanded to the generation of computer keyboard commands via combining spatial activation patterns with different temporal hemodynamic patterns associated with the task onset delays controlled by human subjects [7], [8]. Magneto-encephalography (MEG), near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), and functional trascranial doppler sonography (fTCD) have also emerged recently as potential candidates for non-invasive BCI (reviewed in [9]).
    It is notable that the flow of information used in the current implementation of BCI is unidirectional, in the sense that the control commands originating from the brain are directed to operate a computer. To establish the bidirectional interface between the brain and the computer, the creation of a computer-to-brain interface, namely CBI, was sought after, whereby the computer-generated commands can be used to modulate the function of the specific brain area via its direct stimulation/suppression, all without engaging the peripheral nervous system and sensory pathways. The bidirectional interface between the brain and the computer would ultimately lead to the development of a ‘Brain-to-Brain Interface’ (BBI), in which neural activities from individual brains are linked and mediated by computers.
    Modern brain stimulation techniques, which typically utilize a computer/electrical circuits for operation, can potentially be used for CBI application under the presence of linkage to a computer. For example, direct electrical stimulation of the motor cortex, achieved by surgically-implanted electrodes, was used to elicit animal limb motion necessary for navigating through complex spatial environments. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) or epicortical stimulation can also be adopted for human application, but would require invasive surgical procedures. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) confers the non-invasive means of neuromodulation; however, lacks penetration depth and spatial specificity due to its electromagnetically inductive nature.
    Transcranial sonication of focused ultrasound (FUS) has emerged as a new breed of non-invasive region-specific brain stimulation technique. Since the seminal feasibility study of Fry et al. back in the late 1950s [12], the neuromodulatory potentials of ultrasound have been demonstrated in ex vivo tissues [13] and more recently in rodent models . Transcranial FUS techniques deliver highly focused acoustic energy to the localized deep regions of the brain, and have been used in thermal ablation of brain tumors and functional neurosurgery. When given in pulsed mode at low acoustic energy, far below the thermal or cavitation threshold which may damage the underlying tissue, FUS is capable of modulating the excitability of sonicated tissues. This ability has been demonstrated in excitation/suppression of rabbit motor/visual cortices. Furthermore, FUS has proven itself as a versatile means of non-invasive neuromodulation in the suppression of chemically-induced epilepsy [18] and in altering the concentrations of extracellular neurotransmitters. Most of the current FUS devices are controlled by a computer, making them favorable candidates for the CBI.
    With realization of FUS-based non-invasive neuromodulation as a CBI, we were motivated to implement a novel concept of BBI by combining the EEG-based BCI and FUS-based CBI. Using a processing computer as an interface between the two, the implementation is straightforward. A thought-process (intention to stimulate a rat brain) originating from a human participant is detected in forms of EEG-based steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP). Upon detection, a computer triggers the operation of the FUS that stimulates the motor cortex of a rat (Sprague-Dawley), which elicits the subsequent tail movement.

    Materials and Methods
    Overview
    This study was conducted under approval by the Partners Human Research Committee (Institutional Review Board of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Partners Healthcare Systems) for the study involving humans, and by the Harvard Medical Area Standing Committee on Animals for the experimental portion involving animals. All experiments were conducted within the premise of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. All the participants provided their written informed consent to participate in the study according to the approved procedures set forth by the IRB. The overall set-up of the BBI configuration is depicted in Figure 1, which consists of BCI and CBI segments. In the BCI segment, EEG signals obtained from the operator via single-montage surface electrodes are processed by a computer. The synchronization of the EEG signal fluctuation with respect to the external visual stimuli occurs only when the individual actively gazes at the stimulus source (thus, generating the SSVEP). This synchronization manifests itself in the form of increased signal amplitude in the EEG bandwidth corresponding to the specific visual stimulation frequency.“
    SSVEP is a widely-accepted detection mechanism used in the context of BCI. SSVEP signals are generated only when the participant intentionally gazes at the flickering light source, and the user’s act of actively focusing on the flicker source is indispensible to the actuation of the BCI system. Due to robust responses of SSVEP across test subjects, along with high performance accuracy after only a short training period [24] or even no prior experience [23], SSVEP is considered to provide excellent alternatives to other EEG-base BCI approaches, for example, P300 component or event-related desynchronization [25]. Once detected by a computer algorithm, the SSVEP subsequently triggers the operation of the FUS-based, non-invasive brain stimulation device that stimulates the motor areas of the rat’s brain. The associated tail movement is recorded for further data analysis.“

    „As humans, our environment consistently exposes us to a variety of dangers. Tornadoes, lightning, flooding and hurricanes can all hamper our survival. Not to mention the fact that most of us can encounter swerving cars or ill-intentioned people at any given moment.
    Biofilms form when bacteria adhere to surfaces in aqueous environments and begin to excrete a slimy, glue-like substance that can anchor them to all kinds of material
    Thousands of years ago, humans realized that they could better survive a dangerous world if they formed into communities, particularly communities consisting of people with different talents. They realized that a community is far more likely to survive through division of labor– one person makes food, another gathers resources, still another protects the community against invaders. Working together in this manner requires communication and cooperation.
    Inhabitants of a community live in close proximity and create various forms of shelter in order to protect themselves from external threats. We build houses that protect our families and larger buildings that protect the entire community. Grouping together inside places of shelter is a logical way to enhance survival.
    With the above in mind, it should come as no surprise that the pathogens we harbor are seldom found as single entities. Although the pathogens that cause acute infection are generally free-floating bacteria – also referred to as planktonic bacteria – those chronic bacterial forms that stick around for decades long ago evolved ways to join together into communities. Why? Because by doing so, they are better able to combat the cells of our immune system bent upon destroying them.
    It turns out that a vast number of the pathogens we harbor are grouped into communities called biofilms. In an article titled “Bacterial Biofilms: A Common Cause of Persistent Infections,” JW Costerton at the Center for Biofilm Engineering in Montana defines a bacterial biofilm as “a structured community of bacterial cells enclosed in a self-produced polymeric matrix and adherent to an inert or living surface.” In layman’s terms, that means that bacteria can join together on essentially any surface and start to form a protective matrix around their group. The matrix is made of polymers – substances composed of molecules with repeating structural units that are connected by chemical bonds.
    According to the Center for Biofilm Engineering at Montana State University, biofilms form when bacteria adhere to surfaces in aqueous environments and begin to excrete a slimy, glue-like substance that can anchor them to all kinds of material – such as metals, plastics, soil particles, medical implant materials and, most significantly, human or animal tissue. The first bacterial colonists to adhere to a surface initially do so by inducing weak, reversible bonds called van der Waals forces. If the colonists are not immediately separated from the surface, they can anchor themselves more permanently using cell adhesion molecules, proteins on their surfaces that bind other cells in a process called cell adhesion.

    These bacterial pioneers facilitate the arrival of other pathogens by providing more diverse adhesion sites. They also begin to build the matrix that holds the biofilm together. If there are species that are unable to attach to a surface on their own, they are often able to anchor themselves to the matrix or directly to earlier colonists.
    During colonization, things start to get interesting. Multiple studies have shown that during the time a biofilm is being created, the pathogens inside it can communicate with each other thanks to a phenomenon called quorum sensing. Although the mechanisms behind quorum sensing are not fully understood, the phenomenon allows a single-celled bacterium to perceive how many other bacteria are in close proximity. If a bacterium can sense that it is surrounded by a dense population of other pathogens, it is more inclined to join them and contribute to the formation of a biofilm.
    Bacteria that engage in quorum sensing communicate their presence by emitting chemical messages that their fellow infectious agents are able to recognize. When the messages grow strong enough, the bacteria respond en masse, behaving as a group. Quorum sensing can occur within a single bacterial species as well as between diverse species, and can regulate a host of different processes, essentially serving as a simple communication network. A variety of different molecules can be used as signals.
    “Disease-causing bacteria talk to each other with a chemical vocabulary,” says Doug Hibbins of Princeton University. A graduate student in the lab of Princeton University microbiologist Dr. Bonnie Bassler, Hibbins was part of a research effort which shed light on how the bacteria that cause cholera form biofilms and communicate via quorum sensing.
    “Forming a biofilm is one of the crucial steps in cholera’s progression,” states Bassler. “They [bacteria] cover themselves in a sort of goop that’s a shield against antibiotics, allowing them to grow rapidly. When they sense there are enough of them, they try to leave the body.”
    Although cholera bacteria use the intestines as a breeding ground, after enough biofilms have formed, planktonic bacteria inside the biofilm seek to leave the body in order to infect a new host. It didn’t take long for Bassler and team to realize that the bacteria inside cholera biofilms must signal each other in order to communicate that it’s time for the colony to stop reproducing and focus instead on leaving the body.
    “We generically understood that bacteria talk to each other with quorum sensing, but we didn’t know the specific chemical words that cholera uses,” Bassler said.“
