    „These fragments are most likely bits of fungal spores that have burst after swelling with water,“ said lead author Michael Lawler, assistant project specialist in the Ultrafine Aerosol Laboratory headed by co-author James Smith, UCI professor of chemistry. „It was unexpected to identify them as fungal fragments. The appearance of large numbers of atmospheric nanoparticles is usually ascribed to reactions of gases in the atmosphere, growing up from molecules rather than breaking down from larger particles.“
    He said these lofted bits of fungus are easier to inhale deep into the lungs than intact cells, which can be thousands of nanometers in diameter. This means they may contribute to fungus-related allergic reactions and asthma among susceptible people.
    The study also explored how these tiny crumbs of biological matter might aid in the creation of ice clouds, as some such cells have been found to facilitate ice formation in the sky.
    „Large, intact biological cells are extremely rare in the atmosphere, but we’ve identified fungal nanoparticles in orders-of-magnitude higher concentrations, so if some or all of these are good ice nuclei, they could play a role in ice cloud formation,“ Lawler said.
    To make these observations, the researchers drew air into an inlet that size-selected ambient particles to take in only those measuring 20 to 60 nanometers in diameter.
    The samples were collected onto a thin platinum filament for 30 minutes and then vaporized; the resulting gases were detected using a high-resolution mass spectrometer.

    Karl Koch (Karl Werner Lothar Koch, auch bekannt unter seinem Pseudonym Hagbard Celine; * 22. Juli 1965 in Hannover; † 23. oder 24. Mai 1989 in Ohof) war ein deutscher Hacker.
    Hackerkarriere[:
    Im Jahr 1984 erbte Koch nach dem Krebstod seines Vaters 240.000 DM (heute umgerechnet 220.000 Euro), von denen er die Hälfte seinen Schwestern überließ. Von seinem Anteil des Erbes mietete er eine eigene Wohnung in Hannover und kaufte sich unter anderem einen Atari ST. Kurz danach gründete er in Hannover einen Ableger des Chaos Computer Clubs unter dem Namen „Leitstelle511“ mit, der bis heute existiert.
    Koch benutzte in den Datennetzen das Pseudonym „Hagbard Celine“ (Name einer Hauptfigur der Romantrilogie Illuminatus! von Robert Shea und Robert Anton Wilson, die Koch mit 14 Jahren las und die ihn stark beeinflusste). Auch seinen Computer hatte er nach dem der Illuminatus-Trilogie „FUCKUP“ („First Universal Cybernetic-Kinetic Ultra-Micro Programmer“) benannt. Koch war davon überzeugt, dass es die Illuminaten, wie sie in Illuminatus! beschrieben wurden, tatsächlich gibt, und versuchte – wie Hagbard Celine im Roman – diese mit seinen eigenen Mitteln, eben dem Hacken, zu bekämpfen.
    Karl Koch war ein überzeugter Anarchist, der seine Hacks auf Grund seiner Einstellung machte: „Wissen muss für jeden Menschen gleich zugänglich sein!“
    Ab 1985 war Koch Mitglied der SPD.
    KGB-Hack:
    Bekannt wurde Koch vor allem durch den so genannten KGB-Hack. Dabei arbeitete er mit den deutschen Hackern „DOB“ (Dirk-Otto Brezinski), „pengo“ (Hans Heinrich Hübner) und „urmel“ (Markus Hess) zusammen. Der Croupier „Pedro“ (Peter Carl) – der sich in notorischen Geldsorgen befand – sah in den Fähigkeiten der Hacker eine Möglichkeit zum Geldverdienen. Die Idee, ihre Entdeckungen auf den gehackten, westlichen Computersystemen an das KGB zu verkaufen, stammte von „Pedro“. Die Gruppe wurde 1986 durch den amerikanischen Astrophysiker Clifford Stoll, einem Systemadministrator an der Universität von Kalifornien in Berkeley, enttarnt, nachdem ihm aufgefallen war, dass bei einem Großrechner, für den er mit zuständig war, Kosten von 75 US-Cent für in Anspruch genommene Rechnerleistung angefallen waren, die keinem Abrechnungskonto zugeordnet werden konnten. Da dies ein Hinweis auf einen unerlaubten Eindringling war, ging er der Sache trotz des geringen Betrags nach und kam dadurch schließlich Koch auf die Spur. Stoll schrieb über diese Vorkommnisse das Buch Kuckucksei.
    Tod[:
    In den Monaten vor seinem Tod arbeitete Koch als Fahrer für die Landesgeschäftsstelle der niedersächsischen CDU. Am 1. Juni 1989 wurde seine Leiche in einem Wald bei Ohof im Landkreis Gifhorn gefunden, nachdem er bereits eine Woche vermisst worden war.[8] Amtlich wurde als Todesursache Selbstverbrennung angegeben. Als mögliche Gründe werden Kochs lange emotionale Vereinnahmung durch die „Jagd auf Illuminaten“ und sein dauerhafter Drogenkonsum angenommen, die ihn Ende der 1980er Jahre immer weiter in psychische Probleme getrieben und auch Klinikaufenthalte zur Folge gehabt hatten. Vor allem in der Hackerszene halten sich Gerüchte, Karl Koch sei – möglicherweise aus politischen Motiven oder infolge seiner Verwicklung ins kriminelle Milieu – ermordet worden. Die Todesumstände sind nicht vollständig aufgeklärt.
    Der Spielfilm 23 – Nichts ist so wie es scheint von Hans-Christian Schmid aus dem Jahr 1998 zeichnet Kochs Leben und Wirken nach. Bei der Darstellung einiger Personen und Ereignisse weicht der Film – im Wesentlichen aus dramaturgischen Gründen – von den Tatsachen ab. Die Rolle Kochs spielte August Diehl, der dafür den Deutschen Filmpreis erhielt. Gemeinsam mit Michael Gutmann veröffentlichte Schmid im folgenden Jahr ein Buch mit einer Biographie Kochs.“
