    The House impeached Trump last December for allegedly pressuring Ukraine to open an investigation into his Democratic political rivals. The president was acquitted by the Senate in February.
    While Bush never commented publicly on the allegations and the trial, he and other members of his family have voiced criticism of the president and his policies.
    The former president released the video as confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus, continued to rise in parts of the U.S. The country has confirmed more than 1.1 million COVID-19 cases and more than 66,000 deaths from it.
    Bush invoked the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in his message, noting that the U.S. has faced „times of testing before.“
    „Let’s remember that the suffering we experience as a nation does not fall evenly. In the days to come, it will be especially important to care in practical ways for the elderly, the ill and the unemployed,“ he said.
    Trump has faced continued scrutiny for his early response to the outbreak. The president in February suggested the virus would suddenly „disappear“ and later predicted that everyone who needed a test would have access to one.     „Witnesses in a strange and unexplained UFO case claim an alien was shot dead at an U.S. Air Force Base in New Jersey.
    Ever since this case was presented to the public, numerous UFO researchers have tried getting to the bottom of it with little to no success.
    As the story goes, in the early hours of January 18, 1978, after a night of heavy UFO activity over the McGuire Air Force Base near Trenton, NJ, an extraterrestrial being ended up losing its life on the tarmac.
    Details of the case have been submitted by one Major George A. Filer III, who was an Air Force Intelligence Officer at that time. According to his testimony, a small, grey alien had been shot by a military policeman after the being had left the safety of its spacecraft.
    While he was driving near the base, the policeman noticed the UFO activity was on the high-end of the spectrum and was already in a state of high alert when he came upon a “small being with a large head, black eyes and a very slender body.” Believing they were being invaded, he panicked, got out of his car, pulled out his .45 caliber handgun and demanded that the being lay down on the ground.

    Filer did not witness the event firsthand, but was briefed by the head of the command post over at McGuire AFB.
    “He was very specific about the fact that an alien from outer space had been shot at Fort Dix, and that he had run away after being wounded, and headed for McGuire,” Filer told UFO investigator Dr. Steven Greer. “Now McGuire and Fort Dix just have a fence between them, and this alien apparently climbed the fence or went under it, and got to McGuire and died out on the end of the runway.”
    Filer got there just in time to see the aftermath of an alien being shot to death.
    The security police were already there, guarding the body of an alien “crouched in a fetal position, not breathing.”
    Another witness to this scene was Sgt. Jeff Morse, one of the officers who roped off the body to keep anyone from tampering with it before the specialists arrived. It is very likely that ‘Morse’ is a pseudonym intended to keep the witness’ identity secret.
    Morse told UFO investigators that the “specialists” consisted of a team of military officers wearing blue berets and that their first order of business was to order everybody to take a few steps back, enough that they wouldn’t be able to see the details.
    But he managed to see enough to confirm Filer’s description of the otherworldly being. He vividly remembers “the skin of the unclad, hairless body was wet, shiny and snake-like.”

    „Nearly 70 residents sickened with the coronavirus have died at a Massachusetts home for aging veterans, as state and federal officials try to figure out what went wrong in the deadliest known outbreak at a long-term care facility in the U.S.
    While the death toll at the state-run Holyoke Soldiers‘ Home continues to climb, federal officials are investigating whether residents were denied proper medical care and the state’s top prosecutor is deciding whether to bring legal action.
    “It’s horrific,” said Edward Lapointe, whose father-in-law lives at the home and had a mild case of the virus. “These guys never had a chance.“
    Sixty-eight veteran residents who tested positive for the virus have died, officials said Tuesday, and it’s not known whether another person who died had COVID-19. Another 82 residents and 81 employees have tested positive.
    The home’s superintendent, who’s been placed on administrative leave, has defended his response and accused state officials of falsely claiming they were unaware of the scope of the problem there.
    The superintendent, Bennett Walsh, said earlier this month state officials knew that the home was in “crisis mode” when it came to staffing shortages and were notified early and often about the contagion at the facility.
    Staffing problems that plagued the home for years contributed to the virus spreading like wildfire, said Joan Miller, a nurse at the home.
    Because staffing was so tight, workers from one unit were constantly moving to other units to help out — and bringing their germs with them, she said. At one point, a unit was shut down because there wasn’t enough staff to operate it, and those veterans were moved into close quarters in other parts of the building, she said.
    “Veterans were on top of each other,” she said. “We didn’t know who was positive and who was negative and then they grouped people together and that really exacerbated it even more,” said Miller, who spoke through a mask during a break from her job at the facility.
    “That’s when it really blew up,“ she said.
    The situation is now “somewhat contained“ because there are so few veterans living there, Miller said. There were nearly 230 residents living at the home in late March and only about 100 remained on Monday, The Boston Globe reported.
    For most people, the coronavirus causes mild or moderate symptoms, such as fever and cough, that clear up in two to three weeks. For some, especially older adults and the infirm, it can cause more severe illness, including pneumonia.
    Beth Lapointe said her father’s roommate tested positive for the virus in March — and later died — but her father was initially denied a test because he didn’t show any symptoms. As the virus spread, family members were kept in the dark about what was going on inside, she said.
    “Every day I would ask different people, ‘What’s going on in there?‘ And I would never get information,” she said.
    Republican Gov. Charlie Baker’s administration has hired an outside attorney to conduct an investigation into the deaths. Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey is also investigating to determine “what went wrong at this facility and determine if legal action is warranted.“
    And the U.S. attorney’s office in Massachusetts and Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division are looking into whether the home violated residents‘ rights by failing to provide them proper medical care.
    The death toll at the home appears to be the largest at a long-term care facility in the United States, experts said.
    “It’s also symbolic of how unprepared many nursing facilities have been,” said Dr. Michael Wasserman, president of the California Association of Long Term Care Medicine.
    “Geriatricians and experts in long-term care medicine were sounding alarms at the beginning of March and we’ve essentially been ignored by everyone. Federal, state, local government and the nursing home industry,“ he said.
    There is currently no official count of nursing home deaths across the country. The federal government has only recently required the nation’s more than 15,000 nursing homes to start reporting numbers of confirmed and presumed deaths and infections, but it is not yet clear when that count will be published.
    In the meantime, The Associated Press has been compiling its own tally from state health departments and media reports, finding at least 13,762 deaths from outbreaks in nursing homes and long-term care facilities across the country.
    But that is also likely an undercount because only about half the states are currently reporting nursing home deaths and not all count those who died without ever being tested for COVID-19.

    The Insect Allies program was announced by DARPA in 2016. It is a research project that aims to protect the U.S. agricultural food supply by delivering protective genes to plants via insects, which are responsible for the transmission of most plant viruses. Scientists believe loading the bugs up with viruses that would offer plants protective benefits could be one way of ensuring food security in the event of a major threat.
    In an editorial published in the journal Science, a group of researchers led by Richard Guy Reeves, from the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology in Germany, says Insect Allies isn’t exactly what it says it is. Instead, they claim DARPA is potentially developing insects as a means of delivering a „new class of biological weapon.“
    How Does Insect Allies Work?
    There are many threats that could impact upon food security. This includes environmental disasters, natural pathogens and intentional attacks. Crop failure, for whichever of these reasons, has the potential to have devastating consequences—wheat and maize, for example, are relied upon by hundreds of millions across the globe for their basic nutritional needs.

    Scientists with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) are looking at introducing genetically modified viruses that can edit chromosomes directly, like using insects to transmit genetically modified material into plants.

    Genetically altering a species to make it more resilient comes with problems. Introducing alterations directly into a species‘ chromosome is slow, as the alteration must be passed down through generations before it takes hold.
    Instead, scientists with DARPA are looking at introducing genetically modified viruses that can edit chromosomes directly in fields—these are known as horizontal environmental genetic alteration agents (HEGAAs).
    The DARPA program is using the principles of HEGAAs but, unlike traditional methods of dispersal—like spraying fields with them—it wants to spread them through insects. At the moment, maize and tomato plants are being used in experiments and the insects being used for dispersal are leafhoppers, aphids and whiteflies.
    „Insect Allies aims to develop scalable, readily deployable, and generalizable countermeasures against potential natural and engineered threats to mature crops,“ Blake Bextine, DARPA Program Manager for Insect Allies, told Newsweek. „The program is devising technologies to engineer and deliver these targeted therapies on relevant timescales—that is, within a single growing season. To do so, Insect Allies researchers are building on natural, efficient, and highly specific plant virus and insect vector delivery systems to transfer modified, protective genes to plants.“
    Why Biological Weapons?
    Reeves and his colleagues offer a number of assertions about why Insect Allies could end up being a means of bioweapon dispersal. Firstly, they question the very nature of the project—the use of insects. Why, they say, are insects so integral? What is the problem with spraying HEGAAs?
    The team says Insect Allies „appears very limited in its capacity to enhance U.S. agriculture or respond to national emergencies…. As a result, the program may be widely perceived as an effort to develop biological agents for hostile purposes and their means of delivery.“
    Potentially, the viruses being introduced could do harm instead of good. The insects could be used to disperse agents that would prevent seeds from growing. „HEGAA weapons could be extremely transmissible to susceptible crop species, particularly where insects were used as the means of delivery,“ they write. „Chromosomal editing would be targetable to particular crop varieties dependent on their genome sequence (presumably those varieties not grown by the deploying parties).“

    The development of an insect-based system, according to the authors, points to „an intention to develop a means of delivery of HEGAAs for offensive purposes.“ The technology, they say, could quickly be simplified and used to develop a whole new class of biological weapons. „In our view, the program is primarily a bad idea because obvious simplifications of the work plan with already-existing technology can generate predictable and fast-acting weapons, along with their means of delivery, capable of threatening virtually any crop species,“ they wrote.
    The team calls for more transparency from DARPA as the Insect Allies progresses. However, it also says the potential to weaponize this technology is already out there. They say weapons programs are driven by the perceived activities of competitors—maybe the Insect Allies program is a response to intelligence about another nation’s capabilities.
    Furthermore, „the mere announcement of the Insect Allies Program, with its presented justifications, may motivate other countries to develop their own capabilities in this arena—indeed, it may have already done so…. Reversal of funding for this DARPA project…would not in itself close the particular Pandora’s box that HEGAAs or their insect dispersal may represent.“

    He said he disagrees with the conclusion of the editorial in Science, saying technology and research that deals with food security and gene editing „have a higher bar than most for transparency“—and Insect Allies, he says, meets these high standards.
    Responding to the queries relating to delivery—why spraying technology cannot be used—Bextine said these are just not up to the challenge, especially when it comes to responding at a large scale to the most severe threats.
    „Many existing methods for protecting crops are inefficient, expensive, imprecise, or destructive to plants, may require significant infrastructure, and often provide only limited efficacy,“ he said. „Sprayed treatments are impractical for introducing genetic modifications on a large scale and potentially infeasible if the spraying technology does not access the necessary tissues with specificity. Meanwhile, traditional selective breeding methods for introducing protective traits into plants require years to propagate, nowhere near the speed required to prevent a fast-moving threat from developing into a crisis.“
    He added that DARPA would never receive funding for the next generation of aerial spraying technology. The development of this new technology is dependent on industry and other research funders. „Instead, we reach for fundamentally new ways of delivering more precise, efficacious treatments through systems that can be readily adapted to confront a range of potential threats.
