    Das Vereinigte Königreich hat die Europäische Konvention zum Schutz der Menschenrechte und Grundfreiheiten in den Artikeln verletzt, die sich auf das Recht auf Achtung des Privat- und Familienlebens und die Meinungsfreiheit beziehen. Zu diesem Schluss kamen die Richter der Großen Kammer des Europäischen Gerichtshofs für Menschenrechte (EGMR), die entsprechende Entscheidung wurde am Dienstag auf der Website des Gerichts veröffentlicht.

    Nach einhelliger Meinung der Richter hat das Vereinigte Königreich aktiv die Kommunikationsdaten seiner Bürger (Anrufe, SMS-Nachrichten, E-Mail-Korrespondenz usw.) abgefangen und sich illegal Informationen über die Nutzer von Kommunikationsdienstleistern beschafft. Nach Ansicht der Mitglieder der Großen Kammer verstoßen diese Handlungen gegen den achten und zehnten Artikel der Konvention, die den Bürgern der Unterzeichnerstaaten das Recht auf Achtung des Privat- und Familienlebens sowie der Meinungsfreiheit garantieren. Ihrer Meinung nach hat das Vereinigte Königreich durch seine Maßnahmen zum Abfangen von Informationen kein angemessenes Schutzniveau für vertrauliches journalistisches Material geschaffen.“

    „Die Beschwerden gegen das Vereinigte Königreich kamen vor den EGMR, nachdem der ehemalige Mitarbeiter der US National Security Agency, Edward Snowden, im Jahr 2013 Informationen über die Methoden der elektronischen Überwachung durch US-amerikanische und britische Geheimdienste sowie die Tatsache, dass sie persönliche Daten ihrer Bürger aneinander weitergeben, öffentlich gemacht hatte. Snowden behauptete auch, dass Geheimdienste dieser Länder Gesprächen der Führer der anderer Länder illegal abhören. Auf der Flucht vor Verfolgung durch die US-Behörden stellte er Asylanträge in mehreren Ländern, darunter Russland. Am 1. August 2014 erhielt er eine Aufenthaltserlaubnis in der Russischen Föderation für drei Jahre, die später verlängert wurde. In seinem Heimatland wird Snowden vorgeworfen, gegen zwei Artikel des Spionagegesetzes verstoßen zu haben. In jedem dieser Fälle drohen ihm bis zu 10 Jahre Gefängnis. Beamte der US-Regierung haben wiederholt erklärt, dass sie Snowden für einen Verräter halten und ihm nicht verzeihen werden, weil er den nationalen Sicherheitsinteressen schweren Schaden zugefügt hat.     When you hold a job like Defense Minister of Russia, you presumably have to be bold and think outside the box to protect your country from enemy advances. And with his latest strategic idea—cloning an entire army of ancient warriors—Sergei Shoigu is certainly taking a big swing.“

    „In an online session of the Russian Geographical Society last month, Shoigu, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, suggested using the DNA of 3,000-year-old Scythian warriors to potentially bring them back to life. Yes, really.

    First, some background: The Scythian people, who originally came from modern-day Iran, were nomads who traveled around Eurasia between the 9th and 2nd centuries B.C., building a powerful empire that endured for several centuries before finally being phased out by competitors. Two decades ago, archaeologists uncovered the well-preserved remains of the soldiers in a kurgan, or burial mound, in the Tuva region of Siberia.

    Because of Tuva’s position in southern Siberia, much of it is permafrost, meaning a form of soil or turf that always remains frozen. It’s here where the Scythian warrior saga grows complex, because the frozen soil preserves biological matter better than other kinds of ground. Russian defense minister Sergei Shoigu knows this better than anyone, because he’s from Tuva.“

    That example starts to illustrate why the problem is so complex—because a lot of cutting-edge genetic medicine is walking right up to the line without crossing it. Making laws that address full human embryo cloning, then, requires a jigsaw puzzle of careful language that doesn’t rule out these kinds of therapeutic cloning.“
