    „Deutschland hat einen Kurswechsel in der Ukraine-Krise vollzogen und rüstet die Streitkräfte des von Russland attackierten Landes nun mit schweren Waffen aus. Zwei Tage nach Kriegsbeginn entschied die Bundesregierung am Samstag, 1000 Panzerabwehrwaffen sowie 500 Boden-Luft-Raketen vom Typ «Stinger» aus Bundeswehrbeständen so schnell wie möglich in die Ukraine zu liefern. Außerdem wurde den Nato-Partnern Niederlande und Estland die Lieferung von Waffen an die Ukraine genehmigt, die aus deutscher Produktion oder DDR-Beständen stammen. Bisher hatte die Bundesregierung die Lieferung tödlicher Waffen in die Ukraine mit der Begründung abgelehnt, dass es sich um ein Krisengebiet handelt.

    «Der russische Überfall auf die Ukraine markiert eine Zeitenwende. Er bedroht unsere gesamte Nachkriegsordnung», erklärte Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz. «In dieser Situation ist es unsere Pflicht, die Ukraine nach Kräften zu unterstützen bei der Verteidigung gegen die Invasionsarmee von Wladimir Putin. Deutschland steht eng an der Seite der Ukraine.»

    Außenministerin Annalena Baerbock und Vizekanzler Robert Habeck (beide Grüne) erklärten: «Nach dem schamlosen Angriff Russlands muss sich die Ukraine verteidigen können. Sie hat ein unabdingbares Recht auf Selbstverteidigung. Die Bundesregierung unterstützt daher die Ukraine auch bei der Ausstattung mit dringend benötigtem Material.»

    Der ukrainische Präsident Wolodymyr Selenskyj begrüßte die deutsche Entscheidung. «Weiter so, Kanzler Olaf Scholz», schrieb er auf Twitter. Die Ukraine hatte monatelang Waffenlieferungen gefordert. Die Bundesregierung blockte sie unter Verweis auf die strengen deutschen Rüstungsexportrichtlinien und den Koalitionsvertrag ab. Nach den Richtlinien, die vor mehr als 20 Jahren unter der rot-grünen Bundesregierung entstanden, werden keine Waffen in Krisengebiete geliefert.

    Es hat aber bereits Ausnahmen gegeben: So wurden den kurdischen Peschmerga-Kämpfern im Irak Waffen geliefert, um einen Völkermord der Terrororganisation Islamischer Staat (IS) an den Jesiden zu verhindern. Auch an Israel werden aus historischer Verantwortung für die Sicherheit Israels wegen des Holocaust Waffen geliefert, obwohl es sich um ein Krisengebiet handelt.

    Konkret werden nun folgende Waffen an die Ukraine geliefert:

    – 500 Waffen vom Typ «Fliegerfaust 2 Stinger» der Bundeswehr: Mit der 1,5 Meter langen Waffe können von der Schulter aus Ziele in der Luft in bis zu sechs Kilometern Entfernung abgeschossen werden.

    – 1000 Waffen vom Typ «Panzerfaust 3» der Bundeswehr: Mit der 13 Kilogramm schweren Waffe können Soldaten Ziele in 300 bis 400 Metern Entfernung treffen. Je nach Munition kann damit 70 Zentimeter dicker Panzerstahl oder 24 Zentimeter dicker Stahlbeton zum Beispiel in Bunkeranlagen durchschlagen werden.

    – 400 Panzerfäuste aus den Niederlanden: Dem Nachbarland wurde die Lieferung von 400 weiteren Panzerfäusten vom Typ 3 aus deutscher Produktion genehmigt.

    – Neun Haubitzen aus Estland: Dem kleinen baltischen Land erlaubte die Bundesregierung den Export von neun Artilleriegeschützen aus DDR-Altbeständen. Die Haubitzen waren in den 90er Jahren von der Bundeswehr zuerst an Finnland geliefert und später an Estland weitergegeben worden. Dass Deutschland einem Export in die Ukraine zustimmen muss, ist in dem Vertrag zwischen Finnland und Estland geregelt. Es geht dabei um Waffen vom Modell D-30, die Mitte der 50er Jahre in der Sowjetunion entwickelt wurden. Die mehr als drei Tonnen schweren Haubitzen mit ihrem fast fünf Meter langen Kanonenrohr können eingesetzt werden, um feindliche Truppen oder Panzer auf eine Entfernung von bis zu etwa 15 Kilometern zu beschießen.

    – Fahrzeuge und Treibstoff: Zudem soll die Ukraine von Deutschland 14 gepanzerte Fahrzeuge für Personenschutz, gegebenenfalls auch zu Evakuierungszwecken erhalten. Außerdem sollen bis zu 10 000 Tonnen Treibstoff über Polen in die Ukraine geliefert werden.

    Auch die Opposition unterstützte die Waffenlieferungen. «Jetzt, wo man deutlich erkennt, dass man mit der Diplomatie am Ende ist, muss man auch eine Bereitschaft haben, (…) diejenigen, die ganz offensichtlich von dieser Aggression massiv bedroht werden, und in ihrem Leben bedroht werden, die zu unterstützen», sagte CSU-Landesgruppenchef Alexander Dobrindt.

    „A union representing the rights of public-sector workers has called for the suspension of rapid tests for the coronavirus, after media reports showed a swab contained multiple times the permissible trace level of ethylene oxide, a toxic substance.

    The Isotita (Equality) union said rapid tests – which under current protocols thousands of people need to take every 72 hours for work – should be immediately discontinued until health authorities have investigated the matter and determined any health risks.

    Citing the European Chemicals Agency, the union said ethylene oxide – a substance used to coat and sterilise PCR and rapid test nasal swabs – is toxic, carcinogenic and mutagenic even when inhaled.

    Ethylene oxide is a gas commonly used to sterilise many different types of medical devices, including swabs used in test kits. Ethylene oxide (EtO) gas sterilisers have been used by hospitals for over 40 years to sterilise surgical equipment and supplies that are heat sensitive or that cannot tolerate excessive moisture.

    Use of the substance is banned in food production in the EU. Under EU Regulation No. 2015/868, the maximum residue level for the sum (of ethylene oxide and the conversion product 2-chloroethanol), referred to as ethylene oxide, has been specified at 0.05 mg/kg.

    The Isotita union’s concerns come after a report aired two days ago on media channel Pronews TV, about a rapid test swab found to contain 0.36 mg/kg of ethylene oxide.

    The analysis, done by Larnaca-based Food Allergens Lab, had set the detection limit at 0.025 mg/kg.

    The analysis result – which reads “Swab” – is dated October 21.

    The health ministry did not put out a statement on the matter. The Cyprus Mail tried contacting a ministry spokesperson for a comment, but she could not be reached in time for this report.

    Back in August, health authorities ordered a recall of a number of foodstuffs on the market found to contain ethylene oxide, but said at the time that trace amounts pose no direct danger to human health.

    The ministry had then said that the very low levels of ethylene oxide detected in certain batches of foodstuffs – donuts and ice creams – pose no direct danger to human health, “however based on scientific studies it is assessed that frequent consumption on a long-term basis, even with trace amounts of ethylene oxide, increases the risk of developing cancer.”

    It had cited a European Commission decision that the level of ethylene oxide warranting recall of a foodstuff is “that minimum amount of ethylene oxide that is detectable during analysis of a foodstuff.”

    Under EU standards, a food product may be recalled from the market “even where a single ingredient in the foodstuff is shown to be tainted with ethylene oxide at the lowest level detectable, including where the ingredient in question comprises the smallest part of the foodstuff percentage-wise.”

    As such, the ministry added at the time, “there is absolutely no cause for alarm among people who may have consumed a foodstuff that has been recalled.”

    Alexej Nawalny ist Oppositionspolitiker und Putins schärfster Gegner.
    Im August 2020 wurde auf Nawalny in Russland ein Anschlag mit einem Nervengift aus sowjetischer Produktion verübt, den er nur knapp überlebte.
    Nach mehrmonatiger medizinischer Behandlung in Deutschland kehrte Nawalny im Januar 2021 nach Russland zurück, wo er umgehend festgenommen wurde. Aktuell sitzt er in Haft in einer Strafkolonie in Pokrow östlich von Moskau.
    Nawalny macht Putin für seine Vergiftung verantwortlich. Der Kreml weist die Vorwürfe zurück.

    Was aber will Putin? Nawalny meint: „Die Aufmerksamkeit der Menschen in Russland von den wirklichen Problemen – der wirtschaftlichen Entwicklung, den steigenden Preisen, der herrschenden Gesetzlosigkeit – ablenken und sie auf das Format der „imperialen Hysterie“ zu lenken.“

    Nach eigenen Worten strebt Russland ungeachtet der umstrittenen Anerkennung der Separatistengebiete in der Ostukraine nicht nach der Wiedererrichtung eines Imperiums. „Das entspricht absolut nicht der Wirklichkeit“, sagte Putin am Dienstag im Kreml. Moskau habe die „Spekulationen“ zu dem Thema gesehen, „dass Russland das Reich in den imperialen Grenzen wiedererrichten“ wolle, sagte Putin. Im Gespräch mit Merkur.de hatte jüngst auch Kiews Bürgermeister Vitali Klitschko von Putins Traum vom Wiederaufbau der Sowjetunion gesprochen. Die Ukraine aber wolle „nicht zurück in die Sowjetunion. Das ist ganz klar unsere Message“, sagte Klitschko in München.
