• Hacking People: Is The Human Brain The Ultimate Attack Vector?

„Hacking People: Is The Human Brain The Ultimate Attack Vector?
Attacks: Jennifer Scheer: September 26, 2018, 9 months ago
    Network-assessment
Human beings are an arrogant species. We consider ourselves to be highly evolved. We think we have superior brains. We feel we are in full control of our beliefs and behaviors. Because the alternative—that we’re not in control, and worse, that we can be manipulated—is frightening. And yet, history is brimming with various examples of how reasonably intelligent people can be made to do things other reasonably intelligent people would never even contemplate.
The Basics of The Human Brain
When considering the human brain and its “higher functions” of thought and action, we’re referring to the cerebrum—or more precisely, the neocortex, which is the part of the mind that processes information. All “intelligent” animals—like humans, other primates, dolphins—all have a neocortex. Our so-called “little brain” is the cerebellum, which coordinates and regulates muscular activity, such as movement, balance, and posture. We use the cerebellum for voluntary activities like walking. From an evolutionary perspective, this part of the brain is much older.
The limbic system sits underneath the neocortex and is the part of the brain that deals with instinct and mood. It’s often referred to as the “emotional brain” as it contains the amygdala, which is responsible for emotions, survival instincts, and memory, and can activate an automatic, instinctive reaction—fight, flight, or freeze—without the thinking or deciding that happens in the neocortex. If you’ve heard the term “lizard brain,” that’s the amygdala. And finally, there’s the brain stem, which is responsible for those functions that just happen automatically to keep you alive without any need to think about it—breathing, heartbeat, blood pressure, and the like. If any part of the human mind that can be called “simple,” it’s the brain stem.
Using Brain Science to Influence Behavior
It’s been said that people buy things based on emotion, and then they justify the purchase using logic. In other words, the gray matter inside the cerebral hemisphere, or amygdala, drives the action, and the neocortex kicks in afterwards to rationalize the behavior. Many companies use this understanding of neurological science to entice our lizard brains into buying their goods. A whole industry has grown up around so-called neuromarketing because it works. Countless studies have proven it again and again, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that these same principles are used by bad people with more nefarious intentions.
Consider the notion of propaganda. Wikipedia defines it as “information that is not objective and is used primarily to influence an audience and further an agenda, often by presenting facts selectively to encourage a particular synthesis or perception, or using loaded language to produce an emotional rather than a rational response to the information that is presented.” That’s exactly what the Internet Research Agency (IRA) is purported to have done to promote the Kremlin’s interests in domestic and foreign policy, including Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as to attempt to influence the 2016 US presidential election. More recently, Sweden’s Twitter space was flooded with bot-generated posts created for the purpose of swaying voters. Because of the technology we have today, the influence of such techniques can be highly targeted and broadly amplified. This isn’t about printing leaflets. It’s propaganda on steroids—and you don’t even see it coming. These stories focus on attempts to hack people’s behavior for political purposes, but cybercriminals could just as easily use these techniques for monetary gain.
The Many Ways Humans Can Be Hacked
Cyber attackers look for system vulnerabilities to exploit, and humans have long been one of those systems. The early email scams—those messages from Nigerian princes and lotteries—take advantage of technology as a fast distribution mechanism, capable of reaching millions of people, but the hack itself is purely psychological. Nowadays, many email-borne threats have a technological component in the malware that creates exploitable holes in a computer environment, but they still require humans to be the enabler. And this kind of phishing is just one social engineering technique; there are plenty more in the hacker’s toolkit.
These techniques work, but they lack sophistication. The Russian troll factory is quite another story. Technology played a huge part in this massive effort. Social media, where we tend to create our own little echo chambers anyway, was the perfect environment. Big data analytics made it easy to test huge numbers of message variations and fine-tune them with incredible granularity. And highly segmented targeting (at a low cost, mind you) delivered those messages with the precision of a heat-seeking missile. But again, the technology, as sophisticated as it was, was simply the means to influence human behavior.
As technology gets smaller and more embedded—think wearables and other tech that becomes more than just part of our daily lives, it becomes part of us—an increasing number of opportunities arise to attract our lizard brains and influence our behavior, all without our ever noticing.
    No Easy Fix
Many types of cyberthreats are purely technological, and that’s not likely to change. Those may ultimately be the easy (or at least easier) ones to combat. Software can be patched, while environments can be hardened. But it’s much, much harder to fight cyberthreats that target our lizard brains. Platforms can try to identify this type of activity—Facebook is grappling with this now ahead of the 2018 elections. Education is, of course, always a critical component of cybersecurity. The challenge is that technology gets increasingly sophisticated, but the human brain does not. There’s no patch we can deploy, no upgrade we can install. All we can do is recognize the vulnerability of the lizard brain and keep our neocortex vigilant for attempts to circumvent it.

  • NOTIFICATION OF SERIOUS VIOLATIONS OF HUMAN RIGHTS

    „OKTOBER 1, 2018 AV ADMIN
NOTIFICATION OF SERIOUS VIOLATIONS OF HUMAN RIGHTS
    Stockholm, October 2018
    – the police authority calls for new laws
The police in Sweden today can not investigate human-system interactions with ICT implants (ICT = information and communication technologies) and cyber-physical systems, as the technologies are not yet covered by the penal code (according to the police). The lack of legislation on ICT is remarkable. The problem was raised already in 2005 in an EU report with the Swedish professor Göran Hermerén as chairman.
The research and development of human-system interaction has a long documented history. A history which also inludes human rights violations, silenced by confidentiality of research.
Despite the EU Commission’s warnings, Sweden has not regulated the use of ICT/micro-implants by law, which can now be inserted into the body without surgery.
Sweden has also not regulated by law cyber-physical systems that, together with ICT implants, can monitor people, improve human abilities but also torture people.
We Swedes should no longer allow this research proceed without control. Sweden must ask responsible scientists to respond to the extensive unethical research made on humans, done by the use of decision-making systems and artificial intelligence, in order to retrieve and evaluate information from the brain. The entire research area is unregulated today in the penal code and thus unknown to most.
    The purpose of the research:
To retrieve information from the brain and evaluate it. This in order to build artificial intelligence, general intelligence, a neurobiological explanation model of the brain, robots, and possibly other ICT platforms.
    The responsible:
E.g. Martin Ingvar, Karolinska Institutet, with colleagues in research institutes which have multidisciplinary focus. Evidence is Martin Ingvars and others own public documents.
    Crime evidence:
Systematic abuse and violation of human rights hitherto to an unknown number of persons. Some report that they have been connected to decision-making systems for about 12 years (currently).
    – The research concerning human-system interaction includes mental trauma and physical injuries to humans.
    – ICT implants and cyber-physical systems can control and manipulate the brain.
    – ICT implants may be inserted for research purposes, due to the miniaturization of electronics (so called online implants), at hospital visits without informed consent.
    – Controlling Swedish authorities claim without investigation that people subjected to this research suffer from delusions.
Evidence of human rights abuses can be investigated using empathic neurophysiologists and measurement techniques.
Impartial expertise must investigate this research activity, and eventual conflict of interest between authorities and research institutes as regards the subject human-computer interaction and thereto find out how many people are affected by the classified research methods.
Because the diagnosis of schizophrenia is based on the person’s own stories, it is important to regulate the use of these technologies. Researchers have used the technology in such a way that when the victims seek help and describe their experiences of the technology, doctors will misdiagnose them as suffering from schizophrenia and delusions – a faulty conclusion due to the lack of information from the researchers using the technologies, something that has to be seen as a serious violation of human rights.
These research abuses have affected a large number of people in Sweden (about one person in each city), people who science more or less has destroyed because of the long-term study to extract information from the brain.

WASHINGTON, July 20—The Central Intelligence Agency conducted a 14‐year program to find ways to “control human behavior” through the use of chemical, biological and radiological material, according to agency documents made public today by John Marks, a freelance journalist.
Mr. Marks, an associate of the Center for National Security Studies, asserted at a news conference that Adm. Stansfield Turner, Director of Central Intelligence, in a letter to the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence last week, “seriously distorted” what the C.I.A. research programs involved.
Mr. Marks said that, based on documents about the program he had received under the Freedom of Information Act, he had concluded that Admiral Turner “seems to be practicing what used to be called ‘a modified limited hangout’” when he called the agency’s activity “a program of experimentation with drugs.”
“To be sure, drugs were part of it,” he said, “but so were such other techniques as electric shock, radiation, ultrasonics, psychosurgery, psychology and incapacitating agents, all of which were referred to in documents I have received.”
The documents made public today and the disclosure by the C.I.A. last week that it had found another cache of previously undiscovered records suggested broader experimentation on unwitting humans by the intelligence agency or its paid researchers than had been publicly known before. Mr. Marks said he had obtained or read about 1,000 C.I.A. documents, many of which were never turned over to the Senate intelligence committee for its 1975 investigation of agency activities.
C.I.A. spokesmen declined comment on Mr. Marks’s charges. However, Admiral Turner told newsmen after leaving a meeting with senators that the agency was moving swiftly to review the documents it had found.
Mr. Marks distributed 20 documents that described the following incidents, among others:
¶In 1956, the C.I.A. contracted with a private physician to test “bulbocapnine,” a drug that can cause stupor or induce a catatonic state, on monkeys and “convicts incarcerated at” an unnamed state penitentiary. The agency wanted to known if the drug caused the “loss of speech in man,” “loss of sensitivity to pain—loss of memory, loss of will power.”
¶A letter from an unnamed C.I.A. official in 1949 discussed ways of killing people without leaving a trace. “I believe that there are two chemical substances which would le most useful in that they would leave no characteristic pathological findings, and the quantities needed could be easily transported to places where they were to be used,” the letter said. The letter also suggested exposure of an individual to X‐rays or to an environment in which he would freeze to death. If these methods were too difficult, two methods needing no special equipment, the letter said, would be to “smother the victim with a pillow or to strangle him with a wide piece of cloth, such as a bath towel.”
    Aware of Questionable Nature
¶In 1952, two Russian agents who were “suspected of being doubled” were interrogated using “narcohypnotic” methods. Under medical cover, the documents said the two men were given sodium pentothal and a stimulant. One interrogation produced a “remarkable” regression, the papers said, during which “the subject actually relived certain past activities of his life, some dating back 15 years while, in addition, the subject totally accepted Mr. [name deleted] as an old and trusted and beloved personal friend whom the subject had known in years past in Georgia, U.S.S.R.”
A summary of a 1953 meeting reported a suggestion that the C.I.A. work with scientists of an unidentified foreign government, since “that country allowed experiments with anthrax,” a disease contracted from infected cattle and sheep, and the United States did not.
The documents given to Mr. Marks were heavily edited, apparently for security reasons, but they showed that even while the C.I.A. was operating this program was conscious of its questionable nature.
One 1950 memorandum, on finding psychiatrists to conduct experiments, noted that one applicant’s “ethics might be such that he might not care to cooperate in certain more revolutionary phases of our project.” But it said another candidate’s “ethics are such that he would be completely cooperative in any phase of our program, regardless of how revolutionary it maybe.”
A 1963 inspector general’s report that apparently resulted in a program being discontinued noted “the concepts involved in manipulating human behavior are found by many people both within and outside the agency to be distasteful and unethical.”
According to Mr. Marks’s documents and an earlier Senate investigatiop, the C.I.A. conducted secret medical experiments from 1949 through 1963 under the code names Bluebird, Artichoke, MK Ultra and MK Delta. The C.I.A. inspector general’s report in 1963 described the program as the “research and development of chemical, biological and radiological materials capable of employment in clandestine operations to control human behavior.”
    5,000 New Documents
Last week, Admiral Turner announced that the agency had discovered some 5,000 documents pertaining to the program that were not available to the Senate intelligence committee in 1975. They are financial records of the various experiments and include the names of doctors and medical institutions that performed the tests.
Today, Admiral Turner gave the members a closed‐door briefing on the new material. He will appear before a joint public hearing of the intelligence committee and Senator Edward M. Kennedy’s health subcommittee on July 29 to more fully describe the new findings. The intelligence committee staff will begin studying the documents later this week.
Under the Freedom of Information Act, private citizens can obtain heretofore secret government documents, provided they do not endanger current national security matters or disclose matters that could invade the privacy of other individuals.
Mr. Marks charged that it had taken him nearly two years of legal pressure to dislodge the material he had received. He said he had been promised the additional 5,000 documents before the end of the month.
