    Die russischen Streitkräfte haben nach Ansicht des ukrainischen Präsidenten Wolodymyr Selenskyj seit Beginn ihres Angriffs auf die Ukraine erhebliche Verluste erlitten. «Dies ist der größte Schlag gegen die russische Armee seit Jahrzehnten», sagte Selenskyj in einer am Samstag veröffentlichten Videobotschaft. «Nirgendwo hat sie innerhalb so weniger Tage mehr verloren», sagte Selenskjy am 17. Tag des Krieges. «Unsere Streitkräfte tun alles, um dem Feind jede Lust an einer Fortsetzung des Krieges gegen die Ukraine zu nehmen. Die Verluste der russischen Truppen sind kolossal.»

    Nach ukrainischen Angaben wurden bisher mehr als 360 russische Panzer, sowie mehr als 1200 weitere gepanzerte Fahrzeuge zerstört, außerdem etwa 60 Kampfflugzeuge und 80 Hubschrauber. Die Armee habe mehr als 12000 Soldaten verloren. Die Angaben sind nicht unabhängig überprüfbar. Auch in westlichen Geheimdienstkreisen ist die Rede von erheblichen russischen Verlusten. Bei Angaben über Opfer in den eigenen Reihen halten sich sowohl die russische, als auch die ukrainische Armee bedeckt. Sie berichten vielmehr über Geländegewinne und zerstörte Militärtechnik der Gegenseite.

    «Die meisten Armeen auf der Welt besitzen nicht das, was die russischen Truppen während der Invasion verloren haben», sagte Selenskyj. «Russische Soldaten ergeben sich nicht nur einzeln, sondern in Gruppen. Ganze Gruppen versuchen, von der Ukraine aus, nach Hause, nach Russland zu gelangen.» Mit Blick auf die sowjetische Geschichte und den Sieg über Nazi-Deutschland im «Großen Vaterländischen Krieg» sagte Selenskyj: «Das ist ein vaterländischer Krieg. Das ist ein Volkskrieg. Das ist unser Krieg. Das ist der Krieg für unsere Unabhängigkeit.»“
