Kivelidi’s death was the result of „a drop, a milligram divided by 10, [that] was placed onto his phone,“ Koshelev told Euronews in an interview in Moscow. He added that despite the nerve agent being less potent than subsequent versions, not only was the target killed, but so was his secretary and the pathologist who examined the body.“

Nach gemeinsamen Recherchen der Süddeutschen Zeitung, NDR und WDR mit der Zeit beschaffte ein Agent des Dienstes in den 90er Jahren eine Probe des Stoffs. Auch die Bundeswehr war in den Vorgang eingeschaltet.
Damals an der Entscheidung beteiligte Personen bestätigen den Vorgang, die Bundesregierung und der BND erklärten auf Anfrage zu „nachrichtendienstlichen Angelegenheiten grundsätzlich nur den geheimtagenden Gremien des Deutschen Bundestages“ Auskunft zu geben. „Nowitschok“ gilt als eine der tödlichsten je entwickelten C-Waffen, ihr Einsatz gegen den russischen Überläufer Sergej Skripal und seine Tochter im März dieses Jahres im englischen Salisbury führte zu einer diplomatischen Krise zwischen Moskau und dem Westen.
Die Sache führte zu komplizierten Diskussionen innerhalb der Bundesregierung. Die damalige Operation, die nach Angaben von Beteiligten in der ersten Hälfte der 90er Jahre begann, war innerhalb der Bundesregierung umstritten. Der BND führte bereits seit einiger Zeit einen russischen Wissenschaftler als Quelle, der angeboten hatte, das bis dahin sorgsam gehütete militärische Geheimnis einer neuen Klasse von chemischen Kampfstoffen gegen die Zusicherung eines sicheren Aufenthaltsstatus für sich und seine Familie zu verraten. Der spätere Überläufer bot sogar an, eine Probe nach Deutschland zu bringen.“

Moscow — Thousands of people took to the streets in Russia’s far eastern city of Khabarovsk for the 24th consecutive day on Monday, continuing a rare spate of ongoing anti-Kremlin demonstrations in the region sparked by the arrest of a local politician.
Sergei Furgal, who defeated an unpopular incumbent for governor from Russian President‘ Vladimir Putin’s ruling party in 2018, was arrested last month on charges relating to murders from 2004 and 2005 and transported to a jail in Moscow. Putin then appointed an acting governor, Mikhail Degtyaryov, who had no connection to the region.
While Furgal’s arrest was seen by many as politically motivated, Degtyaryov’s appointment, which wasn’t welcomed locally, pushed the demonstrations in a more anti-Kremlin direction.“
„Chants of „Russia without Putin,“ „We are power here,“ and „Give us Furgal back“ were heard at the protest on Saturday that drew some 10,000 people despite pouring rain, according to local media. Official estimates put the crowd at roughly 3,500.

Ab Mitte der 1980er-Jahre konnten russische Chemiker die Stoffe synthetisch herstellen. Sie wirken auf das zentrale Nervensystem und hemmen das im Körper produzierte Enzym Acetylcholinesterase. Da dadurch der Neurotransmitter Acetolcholin nicht mehr abgebaut wird, werden die inneren Organe überstimuliert. Krämpfe, Lähmungen und schließlich Atemstillstand sind die Folge.
Großbritannien
Von Nowitschok gibt es mehrere Arten, die fünf- bis zehnmal so stark wirken wie der chemische Kampfstoff VX. Dadurch können sie in minimalen Dosen angewendet werden. Die Folgen einer Vergiftung sind angeblich unheilbar. Sterben die Betroffenen nicht, so sind sie zumindest unfähig, danach ein selbständiges Leben zu führen.
Laut dem im US-Exil lebenden tatarischen Chemieexperten Will Mirsajanow ist zumindest der Kampfstoff „Nowitschok-5“ ein binäres Gift, das heißt die tödliche Wirkung entsteht erst, wenn zwei zuvor unschädliche Stoffe vermischt werden.
Nowitschok wird in der Konvention zum Chemiewaffenverbot zwar nicht namentlich genannt, fällt aber natürlich unter die Bestimmungen des Abkommens. Moskau halte sich an dieses Abkommen, betonte der russische Senator Igor Morosow nach Bekanntwerden der Giftaffäre.

Bekannt ist allerdings, dass es in Russland in den 1990er-Jahren bereits einen Fall einer Nowitschok-Vergiftung gegeben hat: Der Präsident der Rosbisnesbank, Iwan Kiwelidi, starb am 1. August 1995, nachdem ihm Unbekannte den Stoff auf seinen Telefonhörer geschmiert hatten. Kurz darauf starb auch seine Sekretärin, die über eben jenes Telefon den Krankenwagen gerufen hatte, als Kiwelidi Vergiftungserscheinungen zeigte.
Der dritte Tote in dem Fall war der Arzt des Leichenschauhauses, der die Obduktion an dem Geschäftsmann vorgenommen hatte und womöglich dabei ebenfalls mit dem Stoff in Kontakt kam.
