    Smart dust is a name given to extremely small micro computing particles, RFID chips, or other very small technologies.

    A popular article from Extreme Tech describes it in the headline:
    „Smart dust: A complete computer that’s smaller than a grain of sand.“

    An article from War is Boring is titled „Future Military Sensors Could Be Tiny Specks of ‚Smart Dust‘.“

    A paper („Smart Dust“ – Nanostructured Devices in a Grain of Sand) from University of California, San Diego describes smart dust:

    „The term ’smart dust‘ originally referred to miniature wireless semiconductor devices made using fabrication techniques derived from the microelectronics industry.

    These devices incorporate sensing, computing and communications in a centimeter-sized package.“

    It is promoted as an eventuality, that smart dust will cover streets and buildings to identify people, that people will have smart dust in their bodies, and other things in mainstream television and media.

    They paint a utopian, blissful picture of it.

    However, the history of entities involved in creating smart dust show a different perspective.

    The same entities who create destructive technology (drones, surveillance technology, technology for warfare)

    ……. are involved with its creation:

    military industrial complex players, from the RAND Corporation to Hitachi, to DARPA and their collaborators in academia.

    As with all technology, the people who wield it determine whether it’s used for the benefit of, or against the common people.
    The earliest mentions of „smart dust“ come from the RAND Corporation.

    According to Wikipedia:

    „The concepts for Smart Dust emerged from a workshop at RAND in 1992 and a series of DARPA ISAT studies in the mid-1990s due to the potential military applications of the technology.“

    „The work was strongly influenced by work at UCLA and the University of Michigan during that period.“

    The Rand Corporation has been involved in morally reprehensible warfare, think tank activity and strategy in particular, for several decades.

    They were involved in nuclear war strategy, disrespecting the lives of everyone on the planet in scenarios where nuclear bombs would be detonated to retaliate against Russia at the expense of all life on Earth.

    Such apocalyptic scenarios are explored in many RAND publications, and in 2016, they examined possibilities of war with China.

    RAND has published several papers about spraying the skies, involuntarily treating whole populations with chemicals to geoengineer the weather.

    One is titled „Governing Geoengineering Research – A Political and Technical Vulnerability Analysis of Potential Near-Term Options.“

    With the recent announcement that the US government is looking into geoengineering research, it looks like an overt, involuntary treatment of the American people with geoengineering material is coming soon.

    Considering how far back the technology goes, How small is the smallest „smart dust“ today?

    Could it be small enough to perform functions inside the human body, or be involuntarily sprayed on us without us realizing it?

    A June 2016 Singularity Hub article is titled „Smart Dust Is Coming – New Camera Is the Size of a Grain of Salt.“

    „In a new University of Stuttgart paper published in Nature Photonics, scientists describe tiny 3D printed lenses and show how they can take super sharp images.

    Each lens is 120 millionths of a meter in diameter – roughly the size of a grain of table salt – and because they’re 3D printed in one piece, complexity is no barrier.

    Any lens configuration that can be designed on a computer can be printed and used.“

    „The lenses – which included single, double, and triple optical elements – were printed on strands of optical fiber and standard digital sensors like those used in cameras.

    It’s a way of saying that something is completely false or untrue.

The requirements of the system are: 1> they should be as small as possible such that the volume displacement of tissue due to the placement of the device is minimal, 2> They should be untethered/wireless such that they can be remotely controlled. Such a device will sense the biological environment and send the information to a system outside the body in real time. The device will also have the capability to do internal analysis of the sensed data and depending on the analysis results, take further action such as electrical stimulation or drug delivery. The device will harvest energy from external applied fields for its functioning and also modulate the external fields for communicating sensed data.

    The possibilities with such bioelectronic devices are endless, and we are exploring, among others, brain activity recording at a large scale with a precision of single neuron, activity recording in spinal cord and peripheral nervous system, monitoring tumor microenvironment, observing response to pathology development or external stimulus at a single cell level along with integrated functionalities such as stimulation and drug delivery.

    For this work, the National Institute of Health has awarded a perfect and rarely achieved impact score and the NIH Director’s New Innovator Award. We achieved an impact score of “10”—the highest score possible.“

    Abstract—Human Activity Recognition (HAR) is the identifi-
    cation and classification of static and dynamic human activities,
    which find applicability in domains like healthcare, entertain-
    ment, security, and cyber-physical systems. Traditional HAR
    approaches rely on wearable sensors, vision-based systems, or
    ambient sensing, each with inherent limitations such as privacy
    concerns or restricted sensing conditions. Recently, Radio Fre-
    quency (RF)-based HAR has emerged, relying on the interaction
    of RF signals with people to infer activities. Reconfigurable Intel-
    ligent Surfaces (RISs) offers significant potential in this domain
    by enabling dynamic control over the wireless environment, thus
    enhancing the information extracted from RF signals.
    We present an Hand Gesture Recognition (HGR) approach
    that employs our own 6.5 GHz RIS design to manipulate the
    RF medium in an area of interest. We validate the capability
    of our RIS to control the medium by characterizing its steering
    response, and further we gather and publish a dataset for HGR
    classification for three different hand gestures. By employing
    two Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) models trained on
    data gathered under random and optimized RIS configuration
    sequences, we achieved classification accuracies exceeding 90 %.

    I. INTRODUCTION
    HAR is a growing field dedicated to identifying and clas-
    sifying all forms of human activity, encompassing both static
    and dynamic motion [1]. Figure 1 illustrates different types
    of human activity, which include static activities, dynamic
    activities, and activities involving postural transitions [2].
    Static activities include lying, sitting, and standing, which are
    generally easier to identify but can be confused with similar
    postures. Dynamic activities involve continuous movement,
    such as walking or running, which require distinguishing
    between different motion patterns. Activities with postural
    transitions, such as sitting to standing or walking to jogging,
    involve shifts between static and dynamic states and can be
    particularly complex due to overlapping motion patterns.
    The capability of performing accurate HAR has the potential
    to significantly impact various domains [3]. In healthcare,
    HAR can assist in monitoring patient conditions and detecting
    early signs of medical issues [4]. In smart environments,
    HAR can enhance home assistance services to improve quality
    of life and autonomy [5]. In sports, it can contribute to

    improving personal health and well-being [6]. In security,
    HAR can be used for surveillance to identify unusual events
    [7]. Additionally, HAR improves human-computer interaction
    (HCI) by enabling more intuitive and responsive interfaces [8].
    However, HAR is complex, requiring selecting and de-
    ploying suitable sensors to collect information-rich data, pre-
    processing the data, and extracting relevant features. After-
    ward, a range of approaches can be considered to process the
    data, including machine learning and deep learning algorithms
    to recognize activities [9]. Regarding specific sensor types,
    HAR approaches may be vision-based, through monocular or
    stereo cameras [10], based on sensors such as accelerom-
    eters, which can be worn on the body or integrated into
    smartphones or smartwatches to capture direct movement data
    [11]. Additional sensors can provide secondary parameters
    like temperature and humidity, and provide further contextual
    information [12].
    Another emergent method for HAR is the use of RF
    characteristics of the environment, where data relative to the
    interaction of stray or controllable RF signals with objects or
    people within a given Space-of-Interest (SoI) is used as the
    sensor component of the system. By relying on RF signals,
    activities can be detected or classified through the effects
    of body movements on the propagation of these signals,
    allowing for HAR techniques that address concerns about
    monitoring and privacy [13]. It does not require wearable or
    environmental sensors, providing a noninvasive and lower cost
    approach, instead exploiting the already existing plethora of
    RF signals in the environment that originate from ubiquitous
    commodity networks like 5G or WiFi. Since reflected RF
    signals are also captured by receiving antenna.“
