No one in their right mind would ever look forward to a filling at the dentist. Why can’t our teeth fix themselves? Maybe they can. At long last, scientists from the University of Nottingham and Harvard University may have revolutionized the way we look at treating dental issues. Their regenerative dental fillings allow teeth to heal themselves—potentially eliminating the need for the high-pitched drilling inherent in root canals.
Regenerating body parts sounds like something a superhero would do. So how do plain old humans get our teeth to regenerate without falling into a vat of toxic waste?
The tooth filling works by stimulating stem cells to encourage dentin growth. This is the bony material which makes up the majority of the tooth. Therefore, patients can effectively regrow teeth damaged through dental disease. Compared to the current methods used to treat cavities, this might sound great to anyone with a fear of the dentist.
Regenerative Dentistry
Aside from a less traumatic experience in the chair, there are many benefits of this type of dentistry. “Existing dental fillings are toxic to cells and are therefore incompatible with pulp tissue inside the tooth,” said Adam Celiz, a research fellow from the University of Nottingham. “In cases of dental pulp disease and injury a root canal is typically performed to remove the infected tissues.”
Celiz describes the process, “We have designed synthetic biomaterials that can be used similarly to dental fillings but can be placed in direct contact with pulp tissue to stimulate the native stem cell population for repair and regeneration of pulp tissue and the surrounding dentin.”
This method won’t be available the next time you visit your local dentist. However, rest assured knowing scientists are hard at work developing the technique to replace traditional fillings.“

„A Mushroom is Saving Millions of Bees From a Deadly Virus“
„(TT) — According to a recent study published in Nature Scientific Reports, a specific type of mushroom extract can help honey bees fight off a devastating virus that is suspected of contributing to massive bee die-offs in recent years.
The study was conducted by researchers at Washington State University, with help from the USDA and a Washington based business called Fungi Perfecti.
The researchers found that bee colonies that were given mycelium extract from amadou and reishi fungi saw a 79-fold reduction in deformed wing virus and a 45,000-fold reduction in Lake Sinai virus. One of the paper’s authors, WSU entomology professor Steve Sheppard, says that he hopes this finding will make this deadly virus a thing of the past.
“Our greatest hope is that these extracts have such an impact on viruses that they may help varroa mites become an annoyance for bees, rather than causing huge devastation. We’re excited to see where this research leads us. Time is running out for bee populations and the safety and security of the world’s food supply hinges on our ability to find means to improve pollinator health. One of the major ways varroa mites hurt bees is by spreading and amplifying viruses. Mites really put stress on the bees’ immune systems, making them more susceptible to viruses that shorten worker bee lifespans,” Sheppard said.
Sheppard’s lab is working with a company called Fungi Perfecti, which is owned by the famous mushroom researcher Paul Stamets, who is also a co-author of the study.
Sheppard explained that, “Paul previously worked on a project that demonstrated the antiviral properties of mycelial extracts on human cells. He read about viruses hurting bees and called us to explore the use of the extracts on honey bees. After two years, we demonstrated that those anti-viral properties extend to honey bees.”
Unfortunately, the mycelium extract isn’t currently available in large quantities for mass distribution, but Stamets says that they are in the process of increasing their production volume.
“We are ramping up production of the extracts as rapidly as is feasible, given the hurdles we must overcome to deploy this on a wide scale,” Stamets said.
The researchers aren’t entirely sure how the extract works, but they suspect that it either boosts the immune system or somehow fights the viruses.
“We aren’t sure if the mycelium is boosting the bees’ immune system or actually fighting the viruses. We’re working to figure that out, along with testing larger groups of colonies to develop best management practices and determine how much extract should be used and when to have the best impact,” Sheppard explained.

„Following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear power plant accident, radioactive waste leaked into surrounding areas and contaminated waters and food. Seven years later, traces of the disaster were found half a world away — in California’s wine.
A group of French nuclear physicists tested 18 bottles of California’s rosé and cabernet sauvignon produced in 2009 and onward and found that the wines produced after the disaster had increased levels of a man-made radioactive particle. They reported their findings in the pre-print online journal Arxiv.
The researchers used two methods to look for traces of a radioactive isotope called cesium-137. The first method was developed about 20 years ago and could detect the particles through the wine bottle, without destroying or opening it. Since the presence of cesium-137 prior to 1952 is impossible (it’s a man-made isotope first released into the surroundings by nuclear testing in the mid-20th century), it has proven quite effective for detecting fraud in old vintage wines, according to the study.
For a more accurate detection, the researchers destroyed the wines through heating and reducing them „to ashes,“ they wrote. They tested for the cesium-137 in those ashes.
Though they did find increased levels of the radioactive waste, experts say there is nothing to worry about, according to The New York Times. There are no „health and safety concerns to California residents,“ the California Department of Public Health told the Times.
The levels of radioactive toxins found in food and drinks outside of Japan is too low to be dangerous, according the World Health Organization.
Even in Japan at the core of the meltdown, though over 100,000 people were evacuated from their homes, there have been no deaths or radiation sickness reported so far, according to the World Nuclear Association. Further, most bottles of wine made after 1952 do contain at least a little bit of this nuclear twist.“
