The technology transnational companies as Google transmit a message in their lectures that reveals an uncontrolled and dehumanized ambition towards technological innovation development in Latin America, probably due to the great economic power and the poor control that they have.     Transcranial focused ultrasound (FUS) is capable of modulating the neural activity of specific brain regions, with a potential role as a non-invasive computer-to-brain interface (CBI). In conjunction with the use of brain-to-computer interface (BCI) techniques that translate brain function to generate computer commands, we investigated the feasibility of using the FUS-based CBI to non-invasively establish a functional link between the brains of different species (i.e. human and Sprague-Dawley rat), thus creating a brain-to-brain interface (BBI). The implementation was aimed to non-invasively translate the human volunteer’s intention to stimulate a rat’s brain motor area that is responsible for the tail movement. The volunteer initiated the intention by looking at a strobe light flicker on a computer display, and the degree of synchronization in the electroencephalographic steady-state-visual-evoked-potentials (SSVEP) with respect to the strobe frequency was analyzed using a computer. Increased signal amplitude in the SSVEP, indicating the volunteer’s intention, triggered the delivery of a burst-mode FUS (350 kHz ultrasound frequency, tone burst duration of 0.5 ms, pulse repetition frequency of 1 kHz, given for 300 msec duration) to excite the motor area of an anesthetized rat transcranially. The successful excitation subsequently elicited the tail movement, which was detected by a motion sensor. The interface was achieved at 94.0±3.0% accuracy, with a time delay of 1.59±1.07 sec from the thought-initiation to the creation of the tail movement. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of a computer-mediated BBI that links central neural functions between two biological entities, which may confer unexplored opportunities in the study of neuroscience with potential implications for therapeutic applications.

    Introduction
    Brain-to-computer interface (BCI) refers to the hardware and software environment that detects and translates brain activity to control computers or stored-program architecture devices without involving muscles or the peripheral nervous system [1]. To characterize a specific function of the brain, invasive means such as implantable cortical microelectrode arrays that directly detect the electrical field potentials/spikes from the somatomotor areas have been used, for example, to provide BCI control options for quadriplegic patients [2]. Nicolelis and colleagues explored the method of obtaining the neural electrical signals directly from the motor cortex of primates using an implanted cortical electrode array, and decoded the signals obtained during complex motor intentions, into the appropriate machine control [3]. Velliste et al. used intracortical recording schemes in monkeys to convert motor cortex neural activity into a correlated mechanized prosthetic arm movement used for self-feeding [4]. Other than these BCI methods which require a surgery to implant electrodes to the brain surface, non-invasive functional imaging modalities such as electroencephalogram (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) have also been adopted in implementation of BCI. For example, non-invasive EEG-based BCI, with the combinatory inclusion of navigation algorithms, was successfully implemented to allow for thought processes to control the direction of a wheelchair movement [5]. Yoo and colleagues used fMRI, with real-time processing capabilities, to provide computer cursor directional commands based on spatial patterns of cortical activity that were linked to predetermined thought processes [6]. This ability was later expanded to the generation of computer keyboard commands via combining spatial activation patterns with different temporal hemodynamic patterns associated with the task onset delays controlled by human subjects [7], [8]. Magneto-encephalography (MEG), near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), and functional trascranial doppler sonography (fTCD) have also emerged recently as potential candidates for non-invasive BCI (reviewed in [9]).
    It is notable that the flow of information used in the current implementation of BCI is unidirectional, in the sense that the control commands originating from the brain are directed to operate a computer. To establish the bidirectional interface between the brain and the computer, the creation of a computer-to-brain interface, namely CBI, was sought after, whereby the computer-generated commands can be used to modulate the function of the specific brain area via its direct stimulation/suppression, all without engaging the peripheral nervous system and sensory pathways. The bidirectional interface between the brain and the computer would ultimately lead to the development of a ‘Brain-to-Brain Interface’ (BBI), in which neural activities from individual brains are linked and mediated by computers.
    Modern brain stimulation techniques, which typically utilize a computer/electrical circuits for operation, can potentially be used for CBI application under the presence of linkage to a computer. For example, direct electrical stimulation of the motor cortex, achieved by surgically-implanted electrodes, was used to elicit animal limb motion necessary for navigating through complex spatial environments. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) or epicortical stimulation can also be adopted for human application, but would require invasive surgical procedures. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) confers the non-invasive means of neuromodulation; however, lacks penetration depth and spatial specificity due to its electromagnetically inductive nature.
    Transcranial sonication of focused ultrasound (FUS) has emerged as a new breed of non-invasive region-specific brain stimulation technique. Since the seminal feasibility study of Fry et al. back in the late 1950s [12], the neuromodulatory potentials of ultrasound have been demonstrated in ex vivo tissues [13] and more recently in rodent models . Transcranial FUS techniques deliver highly focused acoustic energy to the localized deep regions of the brain, and have been used in thermal ablation of brain tumors and functional neurosurgery. When given in pulsed mode at low acoustic energy, far below the thermal or cavitation threshold which may damage the underlying tissue, FUS is capable of modulating the excitability of sonicated tissues. This ability has been demonstrated in excitation/suppression of rabbit motor/visual cortices. Furthermore, FUS has proven itself as a versatile means of non-invasive neuromodulation in the suppression of chemically-induced epilepsy [18] and in altering the concentrations of extracellular neurotransmitters. Most of the current FUS devices are controlled by a computer, making them favorable candidates for the CBI.
    With realization of FUS-based non-invasive neuromodulation as a CBI, we were motivated to implement a novel concept of BBI by combining the EEG-based BCI and FUS-based CBI. Using a processing computer as an interface between the two, the implementation is straightforward. A thought-process (intention to stimulate a rat brain) originating from a human participant is detected in forms of EEG-based steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP). Upon detection, a computer triggers the operation of the FUS that stimulates the motor cortex of a rat (Sprague-Dawley), which elicits the subsequent tail movement.

    Overview
    This study was conducted under approval by the Partners Human Research Committee (Institutional Review Board of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Partners Healthcare Systems) for the study involving humans, and by the Harvard Medical Area Standing Committee on Animals for the experimental portion involving animals. All experiments were conducted within the premise of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School. All the participants provided their written informed consent to participate in the study according to the approved procedures set forth by the IRB. The overall set-up of the BBI configuration is depicted in Figure 1, which consists of BCI and CBI segments. In the BCI segment, EEG signals obtained from the operator via single-montage surface electrodes are processed by a computer. The synchronization of the EEG signal fluctuation with respect to the external visual stimuli occurs only when the individual actively gazes at the stimulus source (thus, generating the SSVEP). This synchronization manifests itself in the form of increased signal amplitude in the EEG bandwidth corresponding to the specific visual stimulation frequency.“
    SSVEP is a widely-accepted detection mechanism used in the context of BCI. SSVEP signals are generated only when the participant intentionally gazes at the flickering light source, and the user’s act of actively focusing on the flicker source is indispensible to the actuation of the BCI system. Due to robust responses of SSVEP across test subjects, along with high performance accuracy after only a short training period [24] or even no prior experience [23], SSVEP is considered to provide excellent alternatives to other EEG-base BCI approaches, for example, P300 component or event-related desynchronization [25]. Once detected by a computer algorithm, the SSVEP subsequently triggers the operation of the FUS-based, non-invasive brain stimulation device that stimulates the motor areas of the rat’s brain. The associated tail movement is recorded for further data analysis.“

    „Last year, Pentagon mad science arm Darpa was working on one of its wildest projects yet: a microchip-sized nuclear reactor. The program is now officially done, the agency says. But these sorts of far-out projects have a habit of being reemerging under new managers and new names.
    The project, known as the „Chip-Scale High Energy Atomic Beams“ program, is an effort aimed at working on the core technologies behind a tiny particle accelerator, capable of firing subatomic particles at incredible speeds. It’s part of a larger Darpa plan to reduce all sorts of devices to microchip-scale – including cryogenic coolers , video cameras and multi-purpose sensors. All of the projects are ambitious (this is Darpa, after all). But this had to be the most ambitious of the lot. Here’s how Darpa’s plans for fiscal year 2009 described it:
    Chip-scale integration offers precise, micro actuators and high electric field generation at modest power levels that will enable several order of magnitude decreases in the volume needed to accelerate the ions. Furthermore, thermal isolation techniques will enable high efficiency beam to power converters, perhaps making chipscale self-sustained fusion possible.
    Achieving controlled nuclear fusion – the reaction that powers the sun – has been a dream for more than sixty years. Currently hopes are focused on the $13 billion International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). This is a giant „Tokamak“ device, containing high-temperature plasmas inside donut-shaped magnetic fields. Construction started last year at Caradache in France; the plan is for ITER to produce its first plasma in 2018, and generate significant amounts of power (the target is five hundred megawatts) by 2026.
    In contrast, the Chip-Scale High Energy Atomic Beams project had a budget of just $3 million, and rather shorter timescales; the plans for fiscal year 2009 include: „Develop 0.5 MeV [mega electron-volt] proton beams and collide onto microscale B-11 target with a fusion Q (energy ratio) > 20, possibly leading to self-sustained fusion.“ The energy ratio is the amount of power you get out compared to how much you put in. ITER has a design Q of 10, producing its output with a fifty megawatt input. The Darpa scheme would be twice as efficient.
    And much smaller. The electromagnet for ITER alone weighs 925 tons, so it’s not likely to be made small enough for a vehicle or any other mobile application, Darpa, on the other hand, cheerily indicates that its project will go on to produce „handheld power sources.“
    No further information is available. A few months ago, a Darpa media contact told Danger Room: „At the point we’re way too early in programmatics to have anything to talk about“ – and promised to get in touch as soon as there was anything to discuss. Later, the budget for fiscal year 2010 came out; Chip-Scale High Energy Atomic Beams are gone. Where did the project go? No one at the agency seems to know. „I’m afraid that if the program’s not in the budget request then we’re not pursuing it anymore and are therefore not tracking that activity any longer – we also don’t keep any information on things we’re not doing,“ a Darpa rep told me.
    Darpa cancels research programs all the time for failing to meet strict performance goals. The agency is also sensitive to the perception that its veering from the world of hard-to-reach science… and into the realm of science fiction. Take that Danger Room favorite, nuclear isomer triggering. It’s a process so controversialthat it has been labeled pseudoscience. Darpa dropped their funding of research in this area after it was revealed by New Scientist magazine in 2003.
    But the military research into isomers still continues. Both the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the U.S. Army continue to fund isomer studies. So perhaps the military has dropped its handheld nuclear reactor completely. Or maybe we’ll find out soon that the studies continue quietly elsewhere, in another corner of the vast military research complex.

This is scientifically questionable because the synbio product is not exactly the same as the product derived from natural sources. The products of synthetic biology are produced with genetic engineering that creates DNA not found in nature.
    If genetic sequencing is about reading DNA, and genetic engineering as we know it is about copying, cutting and pasting it, synthetic biology is about writing and programming new DNA with two main goals: create genetic machines from scratch and gain new insights about how life works.
    The possibilities are quite bizarre.
    For example, there is now a startup company called, Muufri that is working on an animal-free milk product; a crowd-funded group of “biohackers” collaborating in community labs in the Bay Area aim to create a vegan cheese; and the Swiss company, Evolva, is using synthetic biology to develop saffron, vanillin, and stevia.
    Other companies, like Solazyme, are engineering microalgae to produce algal “butter,” protein-rich flour, and a vegan protein. And in academia, research is underway for clusters of synthesized genes to eventually be inserted directly into plants or into microbes in soil and roots that affect plant growth.
    To some, it is a frightening future that has synthesized DNA coming to the farm, market, and dinner table.
    The environmental blog, Grist, has called synthetic biology “the next front in the GMO war.”
    Friends of the Earth, an environmental organization that views genetically modified crops as “a direct extension of chemical agriculture,” calls synbio an “extreme form” of genetic engineering.
    Recently, there was an article that was published by Raytheon that praises their innovative work in the synbio industry.
    Scientists at Raytheon want to use synthetic biology to turn something ordinary, like a stalk of corn, into a sensor that secretly warns of chemical agents in the air. This means that an ear of corn can be synthesized to hear and smell changes in the environment.
    Raytheon believes that there is potential to use crops like these in a combat zone. Specially engineered crops and other living things can react to something in the environment, such as harmful chemical or biological agents, then change their appearance slightly as a secret signal to those who need to know.
    It is quite odd that Raytheon is using corn for synbio research. If you remember in the film “X-Files: Fight the Future” Fox Mulder and Dana Scully find a peculiar cornfield in the middle of the desert. Later we find that the corn has been modified to contain an alien pathogen.
    There’s no way around it: Synthetic biology means you’re altering nature. It requires attributing everything about an organism back to something in its cellular structure, then treating those cells like computer chips, inserting circuits and essentially reprogramming until you get the desired effect.
    It sounds weird but that is the future – full of weird synthetic cornography.
    Synthetic biology starts with using computer-aided design tools to draw circuits and simulate their response to certain situations, then analyzing the data and making adjustments along the way. It’s a little less exciting than putting things in test tubes – but no less important.
    These moves have been in the works for some time and believe it or not they are legal.
    In fact, the ethics of such experiments came to the forefront when a company called “Glowing Plants” started a kickstarter funding campaign.
    Glowing Plants aimed at producing “sustainable natural lighting” through synthetic biology, which exposed loopholes in laws about creating synbio plants and organisms.
    The company laid out a plan to derive DNA from fireflies, modify it to work in a flowering plant related to mustard, order the reprogrammed sequence from a company that laser-prints DNA, coat it onto metal particles, and inject it into seeds using a device called a gene gun. And they promised to distribute some 600,000 of these seeds to supporters.
    FDA regulation was not a problem because the plant was not meant to be eaten, and the EPA said the project would be a matter for the USDA. But because the genes are transferred via gene-gun (a technique developed after guidelines were established in the late 1980s), the plant falls outside the USDA’s purview.
    As a spokesperson for the agency later told the journal Nature, “Regarding synthetic biologics, if they do not pose a plant risk, APHIS [the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service] does not regulate it.
    While creating glowing plants may seem like a fun little hobby for synthetic biologists – there are some serious reasons for finding new ways to synthetically produce corn and other crops.
    We have been warned that a food crisis looming, as farmers in the United States report that income has plummeted. If farmers can no longer afford to grow the food we all buy in the stores.
    Of course, extreme weather has played a role in creating scarcity and crop shortages.
    We are now being told to expect not only a major price hike on the food that is available but a shortage of whole foods as well.
    The personal income of farmers in the U.S. declined by an annualized $11.8 billion between January and March, the biggest 1st quarter drop in 3 years, Bloomberg reported, citing Commerce Department data released Monday. The drop in income is being driven primarily by the fallout from President Trump’s trade disputes, a nosedive in commodity prices, and record flooding in the Midwest. As a result, farmer bankruptcies in the Midwest have shot up to levels the U.S. hasn’t seen for approximately a decade.
    This makes the prospect of a food crisis very real. Although reports from the government claim that progress in the trade war can be described as “cautiously optimistic,” little can be done for the farmers already struggling. According to a report by Axios, America’s farmers are living through the worst economic crisis in almost 30 years and there is no end in sight.
    Government interference in the food market is having a much heavier effect on farmers than it has on others. As New York Times columnist Paul Krugman writes, rural America is being “undermined by powerful economic forces that nobody knows how to stop.” The booming economy the mainstream media continues to relentlessly drone on about isn’t touching all corners of the country, and farmers, in particular, are facing a very different economic reality than the economic growth and low unemployment rate that Americans are experiencing elsewhere.
    We all eat, whether you’re a vegan or carnivore, the destruction of American’s farmers will play a huge role in the cost of food and the ability to find or even be able to afford food that isn’t laced with antibiotics, chemicals, pesticides, or GMO.
    That is the biggest worry is that eventually we may all have to be subjected to eating GMO crops and even synthetic vegetables and lab raised beef and chicken.
    This deviation in farming could soon spill over and affect every single one of us.
    The technocrats believe that the global food system is ripe for redesign.
    By 2050, we can expect at least two billion additional eaters, as well as heightened demand for feed crops to support growing appetites for meat and dairy.
    Scientists and agriculturist are saying that with the planet facing scarcity we cannot rely on pure nature to satisfy the need for vegetables, fruit, meat and dairy.
    Synbio approaches could, in time, reprogram the most basic interactions between plants and their environment.
    Synthetic biology builds on decades of advances in molecular biology, systems biology, and biotechnology.
    In time, scientists could take genes and make specific mutations, but it was still nature’s foundation.
    The bottom line is that scientists justify synthetic biology because they feel that we no longer have to be stuck with what nature has on offer.
    We are now able to create things from scratch.
    GMO crops today have been engineered to tolerate pests, herbicides, disease, or drought.
    With the tools of synbio, an organism could be programmed to have a genetic trait that could “deal with the problem, and then go away – it does not have to stick around and be a burden on agriculture.
    The accelerating pace of this work opens a door for new risks. According to Pamela Silver, professor of biochemistry and systems biology at Harvard Medical School, however, synthetic biology is like many other technologies in the realm of dual-use research. “There’s the good side and the potential dark side.”
    There have been plenty of science fiction and horror films dealing with the potential dark side of killer plants.
    Consider, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Day of the Triffids or even Little Shop of Horrors. These all involve seemingly passive plants that turn into an enemy of mankind.
    They warn us of what happens when mankind tinkers with the natural order of things.
    Making a plant an apex predator could happen through synthetic biology.
    No matter how many oaths, declarations, safety inspections, tripwires, laws, and policies are developed and enforced; none will dissolve the inherent risk in interactions between nature, technology, and humans.
    Even in an environment where there is a common agreement of intent, there are and will be many uncertainties associated with developing synthetic life. It is indeed possible that an individual or group could take advantage of accessible tools and open-source information and use them for malicious purposes in secret.
    There was a film that was shown at the Sundance Film Festival in 2007 called “Strange Culture.” It is certainly a plant horror film but the terrifying thing is that the events in the film actually happened.
    The film examines the case of artist and professor Steve Kurtz, a member of the Critical Art Ensemble (CAE). The work of Kurtz and other CAE members dealt with genetically modified food and other issues of science and public policy.
    After his wife, Hope, died of heart failure, paramedics arrived and became suspicious when they noticed Petri dishes and other scientific equipment related to Kurtz’s art in his home. They summoned the FBI, who detained Kurtz within hours on suspicion of bioterrorism.
    They accused Kurtz of creating a genetically modified plant that could kill humans. Many people believe that Kurtz was arrested based on his politics and that what he did was not illegal.
    What he did was not illegal, however, the culture of biohackers — their tools, spaces, and techniques are becoming policy itself. The makeup of the community and its technological and ethical limits are inseparable from a system of rules. Embedded within the tools of open science is the importance of monitoring processes and results.
    The system should be transparent and as a result of the botched Kurtz case, many scientists have decided to become garage biologists that hack in secret.
    This is what is called, citizen science.
    The whole idea of citizen science is centered around crowdsourced data and on building on the breakthroughs of others as they happen: transparency and accountability are inherent. An effective regulatory framework for citizen science synbio should be able to absorb any new elements that enter the field in real time. However, sustaining such a responsive model will require constant conversation, collaboration and a roadmap that ensure ethical practices.
    Scientists all over the world are creating virus-resistant pigs, heat-tolerant cattle and fatter, more muscular lambs, a big question looms: Will regulation, safety concerns, and public skepticism prevent these advances from becoming anything more than fascinating laboratory experiments, or will the animals transform agriculture and the food supply.
    So far, gene-editing tools have jump-started research worldwide, creating more than 300 pigs, cattle, sheep and goats. Now, proponents of the field say the United States is at a make-or-break moment when government action over the next year could determine whether any gene-edited food animals make it to market.
    Cows are now being gene edited so they do not grow horns – avoiding a grisly procedure in the dairy industry called “disbudding,” when calves’ horns are burned or cut off.
    For farmers seeking to maximize beef production designing, they are now able to design males or other bovines that are female but fatten up like males.
    Males gain weight more efficiently than females. For scientists, successful births would add to a menagerie of gene-edited animals that demonstrate the power of the technology beyond the lab, where their use is mostly routine and uncontroversial.
    Tinkering with the DNA of animals faces a far more uncertain future. The regulatory process for getting animals approved is more complex and treats the edited DNA as a veterinary drug — a difference that animal scientists argue will effectively kill their field by preventing innovations that could make raising livestock more sustainable, more efficient or more humane. Many advocates and ethicists agree that the current oversight system is a poor fit but think that scientists and industry underestimate potential safety concerns.
    For now, gene-edited, synbio, or replicated clone plants will soon be in the grocery store, there are also GMO plants that can sustain chemical bombardment that have been proven to be less healthy for people.
    We can also anticipate that new life forms may be created that have never existed in nature through the use of conventional and perhaps artificially arranged codons (nucleotide sequences that manage protein synthesis). These are likely to make use of the conventional machinery of mitotic cell reproduction and of conventional ribosomes, creating proteins through RNA or XNA interpretation.
    There will be increasing pressures to continue this research. We may need to accelerate the evolution of terrestrial life forms, for example, including Homo sapiens, so that they carry traits and capabilities needed for life in space or even on our own changing planet.
    This may be the reason that NASA and Raytheon are interested in alien DNA.
    Maybe they won’t have to change terrestrial life forms – the weird plants we will be eating will be quite capable of creating mutated species that are prepared for the clandestine alien invasion.“

    „Darpa is often described as the “mad science” wing of the Defense Department. They’re the ones who have a history of working on cutting edge technology for the military like virtual fences, disaster relief robots, and the invention of the internet itself. They even tried to build Skynet in the 1980s.
    But Darpa sent out a tweet today that’s making people a little nervous. The agency wants a large underground facility for “testing” of some sort. And they need it by Friday at 5pm ET.
    Darpa explained in a follow-up tweet that the ideal location would be “several city blocks with complex layouts and multiple stories.”

    Gizmodo reached out to Darpa and the agency confirmed that the turnaround time was short, but said that it was originally posted last week. That’s still incredibly short notice for a government agency that needs a large space for its experiments. Darpa wouldn’t explain why they needed an underground facility so quickly.
    “Complex urban underground infrastructure can present significant challenges for situational awareness in time-sensitive scenarios, such as active combat
    operations or disaster response,” a Darpa spokesperson who asked to remain nameless told Gizmodo by email.
    “DARPA is interested in exploring this domain for researchers to analyze and enhance approaches to improve situational awareness and response times in emergency scenarios,” the Darpa spokesperson continued. “Locations submitted could help the research community identify relevant sites for further field experimentation to accelerate their development of such technologies.”
    That’s great and all. But we’re still confused. Darpa did not respond to an email with follow-up questions.
    Darpa is currently hosting the Subterranean Challenge, which is a bit like their old Robotics Challenge from 2015 only for mapping and traversing underground environments. Darpa’s “Urban Circuit” challenge is happening in February of 2020, so we can guess that this underground location might be for that, but we don’t know for sure. And it would be strange to only organize something like that on a week’s notice.
    Darpa simply isn’t telling us much. In fact, Darpa is making us a bit nervous by its responses on Twitter. When someone said that the urgent need for a tunnel, “sounds both exciting and ominous,” Darpa replied, “even to us.”

As teams prepare for the SubT Challenge Urban Circuit, the program recognizes it can be difficult for them to find locations suitable to test their systems and sensors. DARPA issued this RFI in part to help identify potential representative environments where teams may be able to test in advance of the upcoming event.
    Gizmodo also received an angry email from Jared Adams, Darpa’s Chief of Communications, about the way we were characterizing Darpa. But perhaps the communications department should have a word with whoever controls the agency’s Twitter account. We weren’t the ones concurring that its desire for such a quick turnaround sounded “ominous.” And plenty of other news outlets seemed to think it was weird.“
