    While brewing your morning coffee, you suddenly realize that you can’t smell the freshly ground beans — could you have COVID-19?
    In the past week, doctors around the world began sharing reports of smell and taste loss in patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Several groups of ear, nose and throat specialists have suggested that the symptoms could serve as an early sign of infection, signaling people to self-quarantine before they develop a telltale cough or fever.
    But as of yet, neither smell nor taste loss have been systematically studied in large groups of patients with COVID-19. „We’re still in early days of understanding whether this association is real,“ said Steven Munger, director of the Center for Smell and Taste at the University of Florida (UF) and co-director of the UF Health Smell Disorders Program.
    That said, until scientists know more, Munger said that „if you think you’ve lost your sense of smell or taste, you should self isolate.“ If further research reveals that the symptom is common and somehow linked to a person’s overall prognosis, the precautionary measure could help doctors identify, isolate and triage potential COVID-19 cases without patients making a risky trip to the hospital, he said.
    But again, barring further research, we can’t say exactly how smell loss relates to COVID-19. „Many people out there already have olfactory loss, unrelated to the virus,“ said Dr. Thomas Hummel, a clinician and researcher at the Smell and Taste Clinic in the Department of Otorhinolaryngology at the Technical University of Dresden Medical School in Germany. Hummel belongs to an international research group called the Global Consortium for Chemosensory Research, which aims to determine whether smell loss truly is a common COVID-19 symptom, and if so, what that could mean for patients.
    „I think we need some data,“ Hummel told Live Science.

    Complete smell loss, known as anosmia, and taste loss, called dysgeusia, are closely related ailments associated with a wide variety of conditions, from old age to head trauma to neurodegenerative disease, Munger said. Viral infection, including that caused by coronaviruses, is another common risk factor for both conditions, Hummel said.
    Early data suggest that COVID-19 may also induce symptoms of anosmia and dysgeusia. For instance, a survey of 59 people in Italy found that 20 patients, or about 34%, reported at least one smell or taste disorder, and 11 people, or about 19%, presented with both. A similar survey of 100 patients at University Hospital in Bonn, Germany, found that about two-thirds of the patients noted smell or taste loss that lasted for several days. A survey of about 2,000 patients with a mild COVID-15 infection in South Korea, where diagnostic testing has been more widespread, reported that about 300 patients, or 15%, showed some degree of smell loss, according to Slate magazine.
    Originally, the South Korean study reported that 30% of the surveyed patients had smell loss, and this initial figure was reported by The New York Times, among other outlets. The researchers revised the figure to 15% after including data from two additional days of patient screenings, Slate reported.
    As more and more data pours in, the true proportion of patients with smell and taste loss should become clear, Hummel said. Scientists also need to determine when the symptoms emerge in most people, how severe they are through time, and if and when they dissipate, he said.

    How the virus might affect smell
    But why would patients show these symptoms in the first place? There are three potential explanations, Munger said.
    In one scenario, SARS-CoV-2 could infect the inner lining of the nasal cavity, triggering localized inflammation. Inflammation in the nose can prevent incoming odors from reaching the cells that detect them, „basically just gumming up the works,“ Munger told Live Science. For example, chronic inflammation in the sinuses and nasal cavity — a condition known as chronic rhinosinusitis — is one of g the leading causes of smell loss, Hummel added.
    Alternatively, the virus might specifically target cells in the nose that react to incoming odors. Receptors on these cells serve as docking stations for smelly chemicals, which once bonded to the receptor, jump-start a chemical and electrical reaction that passes information on to the brain. If the cells bearing smell receptors become infected and can’t generate signals, a person could temporarily lose their sense of smell. Thankfully, because these sensory cells are often damaged by chemicals and pathogens, the body replaces them every 30 to 60 days, Munger said.
    Beyond infecting nerve tissue in the nasal cavity, the virus could theoretically „also penetrate the cribriform plate, the bone between the nose and the brain, and infiltrate the olfactory bulb,“ the brain region where cells in the nose send smell information to be processed, Hummel said. A 2008 study of the SARS-CoV virus, which caused an outbreak of severe acute respiratory syndrome in 2002-2003, revealed that the coronavirus could penetrate the olfactory bulbs of transgenic mice.
    From there, SARS-CoV went on to infect deeper structures in the mouse brains, causing extensive damage. Several review papers have suggested that SARS-CoV-2 may do the same in humans and potentially infect regions of the brain that support breathing and heart rate. If this proves to be the case, „some of the purely respiratory symptoms that you might attribute to the disease, the inability to get air into the lungs, might actually be defects in respiration controlled by the nervous system,“ Matthew Anderson, a neuropathologist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, told The Scientist.
    But again, these hypotheses have yet to be supported with hard data.
    Scratch-and-sniff tests
    Understanding the mechanism by which COVID-19 disrupts smell and taste could help doctors predict how patients with the symptoms might fare in the long run.
    „I think it would be very interesting to know what it means for the prognosis of these patients,“ Hummel said. In addition to studying the symptoms of patients in the clinic, scientists could learn from autopsies of patients who have died from COVID-19, to assess tissue damage in the nose and brain, he said. „We can see what’s happening in the brains, to be better equipped for future infections.“
    People could even assess their smell loss at home using well-established tests, Munger said.
    In the U.S., the University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT) serves as the gold standard for smell assessment, Munger said. The test consists of 40 scratch-and-sniff cards that challenge patients to match particular smells to one of four provided options, like an odorous multiple-choice exam. The equivalent test in Europe, which was developed in part by Hummel, is called a Sniffin‘ Stick. Both exams could be sent to patients and taken at home, allowing doctors to triage potential cases from afar, Munger said.
    More informally, people can test their sense of smell using the so-called jelly bean test, he added. When you chew a jelly bean, taste receptors on your tongue pick up the sweetness of sugar, or the sourness of citric acid. Chemicals from the jelly beans also travel to the back of your throat and up into your nasal cavity, where they interact with smell receptors. Your brain sticks these taste and smell sensations together to identify the „flavor“ of a food, so if you plug your nose and chew a jelly bean, its specific flavor disappears, leaving only sweetness or sourness.
    „Then you open your nose and you get, wow, that’s lemon, or orange or lime … that may be one semi-objective way of assessing yourself,“ Munger said.
    Of course, until scientists clarify the link between smell, taste and COVID-19, the utility of these tests remains speculative. In Hummel’s words, we still „we need some data.“

    The NIH is ending a three-year pause on funding research into ways to genetically engineer viruses so they become more contagious or deadly.
    This sort of work is known as „gain of function“ research. It could help us prepare for the possibility that a virus like this might evolve in nature.
    But some fear that there are security risks — a potential accidental release would be dangerous, and the research could be used to create biological weapons.
    Many experts think the greatest possible threat to humanity is a fast-moving airborne pathogen — a particularly deadly flu virus could kill tens of millions of people in a year.
    On Tuesday, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced it was lifting a moratorium on funding research into creating a deadly virus with those capabilities.
    The NIH’s policy shift will allow researchers to take already dangerous viruses and genetically engineer them to be more contagious or deadly. That could mean taking a flu strain or a virus like MERS or SARS and modifying them so they spread more easily or become more fatal.
    These types of experiments are known as „gain of function“ experiments, since they add new — and riskier — functions to diseases.
    The risks of developing powerful, deadly superbugs
    Such research is controversial because of concerns that a modified deadly disease could escape into the wild and infect the public. That could happen if a terrible accident were to occur, or if the know-how for creating a deadly superbug were to fall into the wrong hands.
    „Safety isn’t all about machines or ventilation, it’s also about human judgment,“ Marc Lipsitch, director of the Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics at the Harvard School of Public Health, previously told Business Insider, shortly before the NIH instituted this moratorium.
    The NIH decided to stop funding these sorts of studies in 2014, after a couple of terrifying slip-ups with deadly diseases. In one case, the NIH discovered that vials of smallpox had just been sitting in a cold storage room of a Food and Drug Administration lab (there are only two labs in the world authorized to possess smallpox, one at the CDC in Atlanta and another in Russia). In another case, the CDC accidentally exposed more than 75 workers to anthrax.
    The moratorium halted ongoing studies in Wisconsin and the Netherlands that were working on creating mutant influenza viruses that could spread through the air. The tests were being conducted on ferrets, because airborne virus transmission between the animals closely mimics the process between humans.
    Why researchers want to create pandemic viruses

    The argument in favor of this research is that nature itself creates new deadly, contagious viruses on its own.
    „We are coming up on the centenary of the 1918 influenza pandemic,“ George Poste, a leading member a group that assesses the state of biodefense in the US, recently told Business Insider. „We’ve been fortunately spared anything on that scale for the past 100 years, but it is inevitable that a pandemic strain of equal virulence will emerge.“
    The 1918 pandemic killed approximately 50 million people around the globe, making it one of the deadliest events in human history. Some experts believe that if we can create these types of viruses ourselves in a lab, then we might be able to better understand them before (or when) they naturally appear.
    That’s why the NIH decided to allow these sorts of studies to resume, according to a statement by director Francis Collins.
    „[Gain of function] research is important in helping us identify, understand, and develop strategies and effective countermeasures against rapidly evolving pathogens that pose a threat to public health,“ Collins wrote.
    Experts say there ways to do this work safely, but there are still important questions to address.
    According to Michael Osterholm, director of the University of Minnesota’s Center for Infectious Disease Research, one of the biggest concerns is how details of this work are communicated to the public. Any release of such information comes with security risks, but the NIH review process for funding these studies doesn’t necessarily make it clear how much of the research would become publicly available.
    Say, for example, that a study found ways to genetically modify Ebola virus so it became an airborne pathogen.
    „If [that] were the case, I don’t want the public to have a blueprint on how to do it,“Osterholm said.“

    Air Force General Terrence O’Shaughnessy, who commands NORAD and NORTHCOM, told reporters on Facebook Live last Tuesday that essential staff is being moved from Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado to the underground bunker complex that is 24 miles away in Cheyenne Mountain. The facility is more than 2,000 feet underground and can survive a 30 megaton nuclear explosion.
    „To ensure that we can defend the homeland despite this pandemic, our command and control watch teams here in the headquarters split into multiple shifts and portions of our watch team began working from Cheyenne Mountain Air Force Station, creating a third team at an alternate location as well,“ O’Shaughnessy said.
    „Our dedicated professionals of the NORAD and NORTHCOM command and control watch have left their homes, said goodbye to their families and are isolated from everyone to ensure that they can stand the watch each and every day to defend our homeland.
    „It’s certainly not optimal, but it’s absolutely necessary and appropriate given the situation.“

    NORAD and NORTHCOM have already used up about 30% of the underground facility, according to The Drive. O’Shaughnessy said with the increased personnel, his „primary concern was … are we going to have the space inside the mountain for everybody who wants to move in there, and I’m not at liberty to discuss who’s moving in there.“
    If the staff at Cheyenne are infected, there is a third team of higher-ranking military officials operating at another facility that can remotely assume command.
    With the virus crisis deepening in the US, confirmed cases have now surged over 124,000, with 2,191 deaths (as of Sunday morning). President Trump signed an executive order Friday, allowing the Departments of Defense and Homeland Security to activate National Guard and reservists to battle the COVID-19 outbreak across the US.“

    In der Klinik Giovanni XXIII könne er nur mit Schutzmaske arbeiten. Dies sei für ihn eine große Einschränkung, weil er den Patienten „nicht mal ein Lächeln“ schenken könne. Mehr als einige kurze trostspendende Worte seien wegen der Ansteckungsgefahr meist nicht möglich.
    Gemeinsame Gebete am Handy
    Besonders schmerze ihn, so Apassiti, dass die Angehörigen keine Möglichkeit hätten, ihre Toten von Angesicht zu Angesicht zu betrauern. Er versuche dann, die Familien vom Sarg aus mit dem Smartphone zu kontaktieren, um gemeinsam mit ihnen ein Gebet zu sprechen.     New research shows your blood type may make you more susceptible to catching the novel coronavirus. The study published in Wuhan, China, compared blood types in 2,173 people in Wuhan and Shenzhen with COVID-19 to more than 3,600 healthy people in the same areas.
    It showed people with type A blood may be more likely to catch the virus and die from it. People with type O blood may be less likely to get COVID-19.
    „If you are type A, there is no need to panic. It does not mean you will be infected 100 percent,“ researcher Gao Yingdai told the South China Morning Post. „If you are type O, it does not mean you are absolutely safe, either. You still need to wash your hands and follow the guidelines issued by authorities.“
    The study looked at 206 people in Wuhan who died from the virus. There were 63 percent more type A deadly cases than type O, but the study did not explain why. A significantly higher proportion of the world’s population is also Type A than is Type O.
    The study has not yet been peer-reviewed.“

    The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Torture, Nils Melzer, has issued a report which gives official acknowledgement—possibly for the first time—to aspects of a torture program that has been launched covertly in the US and elsewhere.
    But you wouldn’t know it if you read mainstream media. There has been not a word concerning Melzer’s report in the Associated Press, Reuters, the NY Times, the Washington Post, ad nauseum.
    The report, entitled “Torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment,” deals primarily with delineating the differences and commonalities between physical and psychological torture. In so doing, the report devotes a section to what Melzer is calling “cyber torture.” Melzer writes:
    State, corporate actors and organized criminals not only have the capacity to conduct cyber operations inflicting severe suffering on countless individuals, but may well decide to do so for any of the purposes of torture.
    In a nod to the multiplicity of reports that the SR recently received claiming gang stalking and electronic torture, the report goes on to state that “cybertechnologies can also be used …through intimidation, harassment, surveillance, public shaming and defamation.” The report also expresses concern that cybertechnology may be employed to torture through ….” medical implants, and, conceivably nano- or neurotechnological devices.”
    However, this reporter could locate only two established news outlets which even covered the SR’s report, The Guardian and Al Jazeera. At the time of this writing, the large human rights NGOs, which generally include addressing torture as part of their mandate — Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch, Human Rights First, Physicians for Human Rights,

      Center for Victims of Torture — have not given any acknowledgment to the SR’s report on their websites or in press releases. Nor did they respond to requests for comment on the report.

    The use of electronic and internet-based devices for the purposes of harassment and worse of ordinary citizens has exploded in the last decade or so. While a few local TV networks have ventured into new territory by running some segments on this phenomenon, this has largely been seen as the dominion of “tin foil hats.” A couple examples of rare TV coverage follow:“

    The fact that Melzer’s report seems to have fallen into some sort of black hole raises some questions as to the alliances made by media and NGOs. For example, it is known that the US State Department contributes heavily to some human rights organizations, as do other allied governments. One wonders if their silence has been bought or if there are more complicated political scenarios at play.
    As the report delineates, States, corporate actors and organized criminals are listed as those who have the capacity to use cybertechnology to torture. In other words, powerful interests have aligned themselves with the development of these weapons, including the US military.
    There is a close relationship between torture and human experimentation. When the Church Committee uncovered details implicating the CIA in using citizens as unwitting guinea pigs in pursuit of creating the “perfect spy,” the agency destroyed their files and the programs continued on, quietly. A recent lawsuit, Edgewood Test Vets, reveals a US government disinterested in the welfare of those soldiers put into these chemical and biological human experimentation programs. After decades of neglect, the Army finally agreed to provide medical care for the test subjects in 2017.
    More recently, allegations have surfaced that UCLA Neuropsychiatric Hospital was running a human experimentation program in an inpatient unit, A-South. The program, which was certainly active in the late nineties, appeared to focus on studies of brain electricity and is alleged to have nonconsensually shocked mental patients, as well as giving providing “pharmaceuticals” which resulted in seizure activity. UCLA has brazenly violated the California Public Records Act in failing to respond to requests for routine information about the unit, such as a list of residents who worked there and building plans for the unit, which was reportedly demolished circa 2006.
    In her change.org petition, Dr. Millicent Black elucidates the connection between human experimentation and electronic weapons. Black met with Juan Mendez, the former SR on Torture concerning this issue and writes that
    Patents for military technology have been identified as the cause of many claims of psychological, physical and emotional harassment. Thousands of people in the United States of America are reporting to be targets of the military training missions and government research and contractors for remote neural monitoring, neural warfare and behavior influence technology via the use of Directed Energy Weapons and electronic harassment.
    Brave – The Browser Built for Privacy
    Dr. Black is a pastor and was also part of Techno Crime Fighters, a weekly broadcast which aired on YouTube for the targeted community.
    In 2007, an ACLU attorney in Oregon told me that the “climate wasn’t right” to address police abuse issues. The attorney stated this after documents were leaked to me indicating that the Medford Police Department was taking no action on citizen Internal Affairs complaints, while stating to the complainants that the officers in question had been disciplined. If one expands the definition of police abuse to include systematic abuse of citizens with covert weaponry by government and corporate actors, one may conclude that by tackling these concerns in his report, Dr. Melzer has done a brave and remarkable thing.
    At this juncture, surveillance abuse (which is certainly part and parcel of cyber torture) is getting headlines, as the US Senate readies itself to vote on reauthorizing sections of the PATRIOT Act which allow rampant spying on US citizens. Also making headlines is a lawsuit by CAIR, a Muslim Civil Rights organization, questioning the constitutionality of the “Terrorist Watchlist,” a list which clearly now includes non-Muslim journalists and activists and may have connections to a cyber torture program. Parenthetically, the court sided with CAIR. The Department of Justice is appealing the decision.
    A confluence of attention is now emerging to highlight the perils of the surveillance state. One might only hope that Big Media and Big Human Rights could drop their defensive guard and help to shine a light on this issue, in the hopes of reinstating a culture where both privacy and freedom might again take root and thrive.

    As dystopian as that sounds, the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is already working on a project called Insect Allies which will use insects to infect crops with genetically modified viruses that edit the crops’ genetic profile to make them more resilient against disease, as well as natural and manufactured threats to the food supply.
    Joe Joseph of The Daily Sheeple said a quick Google search would give you enough information to let you know how horrific this kind of technology can be. “…and you’ll find it fascinating just at how unbelievable a weapon this could be, how unintentionally mistakes can be made that can cause irreversible damage…irreparable damage…to the human race. And I mean, FAST!” Joseph said. “A gene drive…if let’s just say there’s a mistake, you could feasibly wipe out the human race in a very very short period of time.     DARPA attempted to squash rising fears about their Insect Allies project and issue reassurances after German and French scientists voiced questions and concerns about the program’s efficacy earlier this month. Those scientists also suggested that it could be “widely perceived as an effort to develop biological agents for hostile purposes and their means of delivery, which—if true—would constitute a breach of the Biological Weapons Convention.”
    If the know-how and means exist to transmit genetic viruses that supposedly create beneficial crop mutations, the opposite will also be possible. DARPA will be able to use insects to deliver gene editing viruses that destroy crops, ruin harvests and adversely affect the wider ecosystem, RT accurately pointed out. This means that those who fear this program are not far off at all for doing so.
    Another project receiving DARPA funding involves releasing genetically modified mosquitoes in the Florida Keys area to transmit a sterilizing genetic virus to their malaria-carrying counterparts. Apart from the unknown effects upon the wider ecosystem, the knowledge gleaned from such research could one day make it possible for a state, a non-state actor, or a non-state actor working on behalf of a state to accidentally or deliberately use insect vectors to unleash a variety of biological agents and genetic viruses upon an unsuspecting population.
    Russian president Vladimir Putin expressed his concerns over the potential for a human killing genetically engineered virus just last year. Whilst chairing a meeting of Russia’s Human Rights Council, Putin stated: “… do you know that biological material is being collected all over the country, from different ethnic groups and people living in different geographical regions of the Russian Federation? The question is – why is it being done? It’s being done purposefully and professionally. We are a kind of object of great interest.”
